2016

Afroza Akter

Student, Department of Pharmacy

BRAC University student Afroza Akter (ID no. 13346053) passed away on January 12, 2016. She joined the Department of Pharmacy, BRAC University for her undergraduate studies in Summer 2013. She was suffering from typhoid and pneumonia.

 

 

 

Dr. Mahabub Hossain

Distinguished Professor and Chairperson, Department of Economics and Social Sciences

Dr. Mahabub Hossain, Distinguished Professor and Chairperson of the Economics and Social Sciences Department at BRAC University, passed away at Cleveland Clinic, USA, on 3 January, 2016 (around 2:00 AM Bangladesh time). He was 71 years old at the time of his death. Dr. Mahabub Hossain was extremely modest and sincere and had a stimulating personality. He was immensely loved and respected. His novel and pro-active work in agricultural economics and rural development is greatly appreciated by both academia and practitioners worldwide and has had a pivotal impact on Bangladesh’s development.

Dr. Mahabub Hossain, immediate past Executive Director of BRAC, joined BRAC University as a Distinguished Professor and Chairperson of Department of Economics and Social Sciences on June 1, 2015.

Dr. Hossain joined as Executive Director of BRAC in June 2007. Prior to joining BRAC, he was Head of the Social Sciences Division at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, and coordinator of the Consortium for Unfavorable Rice Environments (CURE) in Asia. Dr. Hossain, trained in development economics at the University of Cambridge, UK, and has made substantial contributions to research on development economics and agricultural policy in South and Southeast Asia. Dr. Hossain began his career in 1970, as a staff economist at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS, former PIDE) and rose through the ranks to become its Director General from 1988 to 1991. He also worked as a visiting scientist at the Institute of Developing Economies in Tokyo (1981), the International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington DC (1985-87), and the Overseas Development Institute, London (1990).

2015

Farouk Chowdhury

Part time faculty, Department of Economics and Social Sciences

Farouk Chowdhury, former part-time faculty at the Department of Economics and Social Sciences in BRAC University, died at United Hospital in the capital on Friday October 2, 2015. Not only serving in BRAC University, he was also a renowned professor in Dhaka University, McMaster University, the University of Western Ontario and National Defense College. He also worked in the field of development at USAID, the World Bank and The Asia Foundation. He was born on January 5, 1949.

Dulal Hossain

Security supervisor , Administration

Dulal Hossain, security supervisor of BRAC, passed away on August 1, 2015 in a road accident at Mirpur 14, Dhaka, while he was coming to work. He worked as a security supervisor at BRAC University for a long time and recently was working at BRAC (Pin no-98929).

Shayera Moula

Student, Department of English and Humanities

BRAC University-English and Humanities Department alumnus, Shayera Moula passed away in the capital's United Hospital on May 29, 2015. She succumbed to infections that she had battled for weeks. She completed a Masters in Development Studies (MDS) also from BRAC University. Shayera Moula had been with The Daily Star (an English daily newspaper) since the age of 15.

 

 

 

Hride Harun

Student, BRAC Business School

BRAC University undergraduate (BBA program) student Hride Harun breathed her last during the early hours of Friday, February 6, 2015, at Hightech Multicare Hospital. Hride, the only daughter of Mr. Harunur Rashid and Mrs. Nayar Sultana, was suffering from Giant Cell Tumor (GCT). Her funeral took place at Shamoli Shahi Mosque following the ‘Jumuah’ prayer after which she was buried in a local graveyard.

 

 

Professor Mofiz Uddin Ahmed

Professor, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Professor Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, passed away on January 23, 2015 at the Square Hospital, Dhaka. Professor Mofiz Uddin Ahmed was an internationally known plasma physicist. He obtained his Ph. D. in Physico-Mathematical Sciences from Russian Peoples’ Friendship University, Moscow, in 1983 and carried out his post doctoral research in 1984 at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Naples, with a grant from ‘The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (AS-ICTP)’ at Trieste, Italy, of which he was an Associate Member.  Since 1985, Professor Mofiz had supervised M. Sc., M. Phil and Ph. D. students of different universities and research institutes of Bangladesh. He published 95 research papers, 43 scientific popular and 7 books. In recognition of his scientific contributions, Professor Mofiz Uddin Ahmed was awarded the BAAS (Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science) medal in 1998 and UGC (University Grants Commission) awards in 2003 and 2007.

2014

Professor Manjur Karim

Professor, Department of Economics and Social Sciences

Professor Manjur Karim, Department of Economics and Social Sciences, BRAC University passed away at the Square Hospital, Dhaka on October 13, 2014.

He obtained his Ph.D in Sociology from Kansas State University, USA. His specializations included Political Economy, Political Sociology, Nationalism and Social Theory. He had extensive teaching experience in the United States and held faculty positions at University of Nebraska at Kearny and Culver- Stocketon College, Missouri for seventeen years before joining BRAC University in 2007.

Shariful Islam

Student, BRAC Business School

Shariful  Islam (ID #14174014), student of 3rd semester Executive MBA Program, BRAC Business School passed away on September 25, 2014 at Labaid Hospital, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. He was seriously injured in a tragic Bus accident that occurred near Farmgate, Dhaka on 25 September, 2014 around 7:00 PM.

Dr. Fazley Elahi Chowdhury

Assistant Professor, BRAC Business School

Dr. Fazley Elahi Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, BRAC Business School, BRAC University passed away on Friday, June 27, 2014. He taught Management Information System (MIS) in BRAC Business School.

2013

Professor Dr. Khondakar Ashraf Hossain

Member of the Syndicate & Faculty Selection Committee, Administration

Professor Dr. Khondakar Ashraf Hossain, a member of the Syndicate of BRAC University, passed away on June 16, 2013 at Labaid hospital, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. As a member of the Syndicate and a member of the Faculty Selection Committee of BRAC University, Professor Ashraf had been actively engaged with the academic development of BRAC University.

Hossain was born in Joynagar village in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1950. He earned a BA degree in English from the University of Dhaka in 1970, an MA degree in English from the University of Dhaka in 1971, and MAs in Linguistics and ELT from the University of Leeds in 1981. He also obtained a PhD in English from the University of Dhaka and a postgraduate diploma in Teaching English Overseas from the University of Leeds in 1980. His doctoral thesis is entitled Modernism and Beyond: Western Influence on Bangladeshi Poetry. Dr Hossain was a professor and chairman of the Department of English at the University of Dhaka. He had been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of The National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam University at Trishal, Tangail, Bangladesh.

2012

Mohammed Naeem Khan Tamim

Student, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Mohammed Naeem Khan Tamim (ID #12121029), a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, passed away along with his father Mr. M.A. Kashem Khan, in the tragic launch mishap that occurred in the Meghna river near Gazaria on March 12, 2012 night. Their bodies were recovered on the afternoon of 14 March, 2012 from the salvaged launch. The Vice Chancellor and all members of the BRAC University family deeply mourned the tragic loss and pray to Almighty Allah for the salvation of the departed souls. 

2011

Fahim Tawfique Choudhury

Student, Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Fahim Tawfique Choudhury, (ID # 04101014) student of Computer Science and Engineering Department passed away on September 19, 2011. He was a very bright student and got admitted to the University of Alabama for a fully-funded Ph.D. program on Computer Science. He moved to the USA on July 2011.

2008

Professor Gouranga Dev Roy

Professor, Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Professor Gouranga Dev Roy of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, BRAC University, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at his residence in Mirpur, Dhaka.

After completing his B.Sc (Hons.) degree in Mathematics from the University of Dhaka, Professor Roy obtained his MSc Degree in Applied Mathematics from the same university. He earned his Ph.D degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, India. He served as a Professor at Shahjalal University. He joined BRAC University in 2004. Then he went to Malaysia and taught there for a couple of years. He then rejoined BRAC University in January, 2008. Professor Roy was actively associated with the Bangladesh Math Olympiad. He was the author of the book "Ektukhani Ganit". He was also engaged in much research work. His positive attitude, humility and enthusiasm always motivated his colleagues and students. His dreams were around mathematics, but the deadly disease of cancer took him away from his dreams.
