Prof Chowdhury began his career at Dhaka University joining as a Lecturer immediately after graduation in Mathematics. Then he went to the UK on a Commonwealth Scholarship for studies in Business. He obtained Masters and PhD degrees specializing in Production Planning and Control from Birmingham and London University respectively. He has taught at universities in the UK and the Middle East before returning to Dhaka University as Associate Professor at the Institute of Business Administration in 1984. While abroad Prof Chowdhury has worked at British Gas Corporation, London and later as consultant for WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region and resource person for Kuwait Petroleum Corporation at Kuwait. In Bangladesh he has been a local consultant for UNCHS, UNDP, World Bank, USAID and CARE on several assignments ranging from Management Information System to Planning to Resource Management. He is a former member of SEC, Govt of Bangladesh and Dhaka University Senate. Besides being a Director of IBA, he was a member of Board of Governors of IBA and Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM). He is the Founder Chairman of IBA Computer Centre and served as Country Editor of the Journal GIS Asia Pacific published from Singapore and Editor of the Journal of Business for several years.
