Dr. Mohammed Ali Rashid obtained his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics and M.A. in Economics degrees from the University of Dhaka in 1969 and 1970, respectively. Immediately after obtaining his Master’s degree, he joined the Department of Economics of Dhaka University as Lecturer. He proceeded to Australia on an Australian government scholarship in 1975 and obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Newcastle in 1981. He was appointed Professor of Economics at Dhaka University in 1993 and he continued to serve there till October 2001. Immediately after this Dr. Rashid joined North South University as Professor of Economics after taking early retirement from Dhaka University. He subsequently became Chairman of the Department of Economics and Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at North South University from where he retired at the end of 2015. He then joined Southeast University as Professor of Economics and Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences and worked there for little over a year before joining BRAC University as Professor in the Department of Economics and Social Sciences where he is currently working.
In addition to teaching, Professor Rashid has held various other positions. He worked as Member of the Tariff Commission, Government of Bangladesh from 1994 to 2001 on deputation from Dhaka University where he was actively involved in designing Bangladesh’s trade policy. In this capacity he represented Bangladesh in various international forums including WTO and UNCTAD. He served as a Member of the Macroeconomic Advisory Committee to the Finance Minister from 1996 to 2001. He worked as the Director of the Bureau of Economic Research of Dhaka University during 1993-94. He was Visiting Research Fellow at Queen Elizabeth House of Oxford University in United Kingdom in 1992 and Visiting Fellow at Christian Michelsen Institute in Bergen, Norway in 1983. He was Project Director of the Bangladesh Government-World Bank project on Protection Analysis and Trade Cooperation in 1997-99.
Dr. Rashid has written/edited six research books in different areas ranging from private foreign investment in Bangladesh to the Asian Financial Crisis. He has published a large number of papers in peer-reviewed journals and also presented papers in different conferences at home and abroad.
