Zainab Faruqui Ali, PhD
Professor and Chairperson
Professor Zainab Faruqui Ali graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, and received her PhD from The Architectural Association School of Architecture, London in 2000. She has been teaching and researching in architecture for the past thirty years including at the Department of Architecture, BUET. She has been with the Department of Architecture at Brac University from its very start in 2002, where she served till 2012. She was the Director, Student Affairs at BRAC University from 2007 to 2012. She was appointed as a professor at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU), Saudi Arabia for the past five years teaching and researching in architecture and sustainable design. She served as the member of Scientific Council at IAU in 2016-17 period. Prof. Zainab Faruqui Ali has joined as the Chairperson, Department of Architecture at Brac University from September 2018.
Prof. Zainab Faruqui Ali has published numerous papers in journals, authored book chapters, and has been special editor of journals. She is the co-author of the book Muzarul Islam Architect. She has attended many national and international conferences, seminars and workshops as session chair, organizer, chair of steering committee and paper presenter. Prof. Zainab Faruqui Ali is attached with several universities in the country and in the Middle East as external expert for faculty employment and promotion committees, and external reviewer for national accreditations. She is a technical reviewer of Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
Prof. Zainab Faruqui Ali has conducted researches on Environmental Performance of the Buildings of Le Corbusier and L. I. Kahn in the Tropics, Comfort Conditions in the Traditional Buildings of Bengal, Comfort assessment in the Courtyard Apartments in Dhaka, and Environmental Performance of Traditional buildings in Saudi Arabia. Her current researches are on Influence of India on the Architecture of Arabia, and Comparison of Comfort Conditions in Residences of Hot-dry and Warm-humid Climates.
Prof. Zainab Faruqui Ali has been a guest lecturer at the University of Illinois at Chicago, American University in Beirut, The Architectural Association Graduate School in London, and a special lecturer at the American Institute of Architects Northeast Illinois Chapter, USA as well as at many institutions in Bangladesh.
She has worked in several architectural firms in USA and Bangladesh.
Her interests are teaching and research in architecture, sustainable design, history of architecture and art, community architecture, women’s empowerment, and music. She is a singer of Tagore songs.
