HST 102: THE MODERN WORLD
The course covers the industrial, intellectual, social and political history of Europe from the medieval period to the present time including the Enlightenment period, and other world events such as the American Revolution, French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, World War I, World War II, and globalisation and social change.
HST 103: HISTORY OF BANGLADESH
This course will study major political events, organizations and issues that contributed to the birth of Bangladesh and post-independence developments till recent times. It will focus on how secular and religious ideals, language and culture as well as questions of territorialities were negotiated along with those of nationalism, decolonization and nation-formation. Themes will include the first partition of Bengal in 1905 and its multiple nationalist implications; Hindu-Muslim unity and disunity; partition of India and Bengal in 1947; the 1952 Language Movement, Pakistan experiences, as a background to the war of 1971; War-time atrocities and independence; democracy, authoritarianism and militarism in post-independent Bangladesh.
HST 201: MODERN SOUTH ASIA
The course covers the historical and contemporary social and political affairs of South Asian countries including India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and others. It also includes partition of Bengal, communal violence and Rohingya crisis.
HST 202: COMPARATIVE REVOLUTIONS
The course covers various revolutions including ancient and medieval revolutions, French revolutions, Algerian revolutions, Russian revolutions, Chinese revolutions, Japan revolutions, communist revolutions, Nicaraguan revolution, and the Vietnamese revolutions.
HST 302: INTRODUCTION TO WOMEN’S HISTORY
The course will examine the place and participation of women in modern history, with a particular focus on Bangladesh. In doing so, the course will study key ‘feminist’ texts and their contemporary and evolving social and political contexts. Through the examples of women’s resistance and activism in colonial times, during the Bangladesh War of Liberation and in post-colonial times, the course will aim to understand if women’s history is the unwritten history of women or the reinscription of women into history.
HST 403: INTELLECTUAL MOVEMENTS IN BENGAL/BANGLADESH
This course is a part of Intellectual History which studies the history of human thoughts that conceptualize, discuss, and are concerned with new ideas. These new ideas further foster socio-cultural movements or reformations. This course attempts to explore the history of intellectual movements in Bengal; concentrating on the major socio-political and power structures, and revolutions that had a significant effect on Bengal. The course contents cover various intellectual movements, including Bengal Renaissance, Faraizi Movement, Muhammaddya Order, Wahhabi Movement, and Bengali Language Movement.
HST 404: COMPARATIVE GLOBALIZATION
The course covers the elements of globalizations which shapes the modern world. The course includes the Silk Road, travellers and explorers, the Mongols, Colonisations and tea, indigenous Australian, native Australian, African-American history, military transition and technological transformation, music, faith and globalization, pandemic and globalization.
HST 405: ISLAM IN THE WORLD: STATE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS
The course covers the rise and spread of Islamic empires from early Muslim period including Khalifah e Rashidun, Abbasid Caliphate, The Fatimids and Safavids, the Ottoman and Mughal Empire. It also focuses on the contemporary social and political issues of Muslim world such as Palestine, the Arab spring, Muslims in China and Australia and others.
HST 406: MODERN BRITAIN
The course covers the historical and contemporary social and political affairs of modern Britain including Tudor Britain, The Elizabethan era, pre-revolutionary England, the Enlightenment, British-French relation, The Victorian era, the Fabian society, World war 1, feminist history in Britain, British identities and Muslims in Britain, globalization and Brexit, Britain in crisis and American revolution etc.
