BRAC University in collaboration with the University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh successfully organized a half-day workshop on “Building Resilient Universities: Promotion of Civic Values and Media Literacy” on Saturday, October 07, 2017 at the BRAC University Savar Campus.
The core objectives of the workshop were to promote the idea of civic education, media literacy and emotional health to the faculty members of BRAC University. Twenty five faculty members from BRAC University joined the workshop where Professor Sumon Rahman, Department of Media Studies & Journalism, and Director, Office of Faculty Research, ULAB were some of the key speakers.
The project “Building Resilient Universities: Promotion of Civic Values and Media Literacy”, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), USA, is framed for twelve months that includes various activities such as ‘developing curriculum’, ‘student survey’, ‘faculty workshops’ and ‘co-curricular student projects’.
The workshop started with Dr. Ansar Ahmed’s, Pro Vice-Chancellor, BRAC University delivering a welcome speech. Dr. Ahmed also ended the workshop with a ceremony of handing over crests to the visiting team from ULAB and to Fahmida Rahman, Special Projects Officer, Office of Vice-Chancellor, BRAC University for coordinating the workshop.
Dr. Jia Uddin (Assistant Professor, CSE) and his MSc. thesis student, Mr. Rubayat Ahmed Khan received Dr. Fatema Rashid Best Paper Award in IEEE sponsored 4th International Conference on Advances in Electrical Engineering (ICAEE), 28-30 September 2017, IUB Campus, Dhaka, Bangladesh (http://icaee.net/). On behalf of the team, Dr. Jia presented the paper on: Real Time Fire Detection using Enhanced Color Segmentation & Novel Foreground Extraction. In the conference, the conference committee selects three best student papers based on the reviewers and session chair scores. Among 150+ accepted papers from 12 different countries including USA, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Dr. Jia and his graduate student paper won Best Paper Award. At the end of conference, on behalf of the team, Dr. Jia received Dr. Fatema Rashid award from Prof. Saiful Islam, Vice Chanchellor, Bangladesh University of Engineering, &Technology, BUET and Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, Independent University, Bangladesh, IUB. Mr. Rubayat is currently working as a Lecturer in CSE department and another co-author, Ms. Corraya (recently joined at Jagannat University).
On 28 September, 2017, Ms. Farrah Jabeen, Senior Lecturer at BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), has left on study leave to pursue her PhD in ‘Education in Centre for Learning and Research’ at University of Auckland, New Zealand. She previously earned her M.A. degree from University of Liverpool, UK, and has been teaching at BRAC University since 2007.
Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), BRAC University (BRACU), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Daffodil International University (DIU) on September 28, 2017, through which all parties agreed to a collaborative cooperation in the implementation of a national IT/ITES sector skill gap survey to identify interventions in national policy for planning of efficient, equitable and high-quality computer science and engineering education at the tertiary level in Bangladesh.
For successful implementation of the survey, BRACU will work with ADB and DIU to develop employer survey questionnaire in close consultation with University Grants Commission (UGC), other selected universities and industry associations such as Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS), Bangladesh Association of Call Center & Outsourcing (BACCO), and Internet Service Providers Association Bangladesh (ISPAB). The three parties will also work together to analyze the data. The findings of the survey are expected to be jointly disseminated to the public in consultation with related industry associations.

Abdul Mottalib, Chairperson of Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), signed the MoU on behalf of BRACU, Mr. Ryotaro Hayashi, Social Sector Specialist of Human and Social Development Division, signed the MoU on behalf of ADB and Professor Syed Akhter Hossain, Chairperson of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, signed the MoU on behalf of DIU University.
The pre-departure orientation of the Professional Exchange Programme funded by the US State Department was held on 28 September 2017 at GDLN Centre. The programme was organized by Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED), BRAC University. Representative from Oklahoma University Dr. Elanie Steyn along with five current professional fellows shared necessary information through Skype with the participants. Three participants from different backgrounds selected for the professional exchange and to visit USA in fall 2017. They are: Mr. Affan Mahmud, CEO, Boomerang Digital; Mr. Shah Poran, CEO, Handymama.com; and Ms. Nasima Siraji, Managing Director, Florel Baby Care. Professor Dr. Rahim B. Talukdar, Adviser, CED chaired and Mr. Shamim Ehsanul Haque, Assistant Professor, BBS coordinated the event. Other CED officials were also present in the programme. The program started at 6:30 PM and ended at 10:10 PM followed by a dinner.
The Office of Career services & Alumni Relations (OCSAR) organized a seminar on “Unilever Bizmaestros and Unilever Future Leaders Program (Management Trainee Program)” for students of BRAC University on Thursday 28th September 2017 in BRACU Auditorium.
The program was basically designed to identify the high performing graduates who will participate in the competition with other public and private university students. Around 130 students were present in the session. Unilever Bangladesh divided this whole program in two different parts. In the beginning of the program the key speaker of the session, Tasmiah Jabeen, Brand Manager – Lifebuoy, of Unilever gave her vibrant presentation focusing on the Unilever Bangladesh Limited.
In the second part of the program, students were asked to perform a case study provided by Unilever Bangladesh Limited for a preliminary screening process which also includes finding the brightest budding young marketers in campus. The other Unilever team members present in this events were, Tasmia Nova, Leadership Development manager, Fariha Haque, Management trainee – HR, Aurthima Naznoor, ULIP intern – HR, Shahrin Ali, HR officer - Employee engagement and Leadership development, Unilever Bangladesh.
Mr. Kazi Shahnoor Kabir, and Ms. Shanzida Shahab Uddin, OCSAR were present at the session and coordinated the event.
One student, Sinthia Kabir Mumu performed her thesis presentation required under MIC 450 (Research Project, Thesis) course on Thursday, 28 September, 2017 in Room UB 21511 of the MNS Department. The title of her thesis was ‘Antimicrobial activity of Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolin) against skin infection causing bacteria and comparison of its effectiveness with that of the Eucalyptus oil, Lemongrass oil and conventional antibiotics.’ She was supervised by Dr. M. Mahboob Hossain.
The viva-voce examinations for the presentation was chaired by Professor Dr. A. F. M. Yusuf Haider and attended by Professor Mahboob Hossain, Mr. Mahbubul Hasan Siddique, Ms. Fahareen Bita Mosharraf, Ms. Namista Islam and Ms. Nazneen Jahan.
Dr. Shanawez Hossain, Research Fellow of BIGD participated in the Course Evaluation Meeting with the Trainers & Researchers of the Academy of Work (AoW) on 16 September, 2017 at Friedrich Elbert Stiftung (FES) Office, Dhaka. The aim of the meeting was to discuss success and shortcomings of conducting AoW first batch and to plan the next one. He also attended the BRAC advocacy team meeting on 21 September, 2017 at BRAC to discuss ways to make BIGD’s research work more visible to policy makers by organizing joint events and activities. Both BIGD and BRAC Advocacy shared views about jointly organizing advocacy events. Among others Mr. Sadrul Hasan Mazumder, Programme Coordinator, Advocacy for Social Change, BRAC, Ms. Zeenath Sultana, Partnership Analyst and Ms. Nazia Islam, Policy Analyst of BRAC Advocacy for Social Change and Ms. Nazneen Ahmed and Farzana Siddiqua of BIGD were present in the meeting.
Dr. Hossain also attended the Stakeholder Consultation meeting of Metro Dhaka Transformation Platform on 27 September 2017 at a hotel in the city. The aim of the platform is to discuss sustainable, metropolitan-wide solutions to improve livability and prosperity for the residents of Dhaka, and to define a shared vision for the city and an action plan to pave the way for Dhaka’s transformation. Among others Mr. Peter Ellis, Lead Urban Economist, Social, Urban, Rural and Resilience Global Practice, World Bank; Professor Nazrul Islam, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman and related experts participated in the event. He also attended the Sharing meeting on "Urban Disaster Preparedness and Response: A Synthesis Review of Public Documents in Bangladesh" held on 27 September, 2017 at a city hotel. The aim of the meeting was to share a Synthesis Review of Public Documents on urban disaster preparedness in Bangladesh. This analysis was done to collate and critically review all relevant public documents on disaster preparedness and response in Bangladesh, assessing the policies, strategies and plans currently in place, in order to determine the strengths and weaknesses of these plans in the event of a major urban crisis. Mr. Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury (Maya) Bir Bikram, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was Chief Guest in the event. Dr. Maksud Kamal, Professor & Dean Faculty of Earth and Environmental Science, University of Dhaka presented the key note.
Simeen Mahmud attended as a discussant at the seminar titled Challenges of Change: Training Women to Manage in the Bangladeshi Garment Sector, organized by Center for Advanced Research on Social Sciences of Dhaka University on September 24, 2017. She also attended as panel discussants at a National Workshop titled “Women’s Accessibility in Property” organized by ALRD and SANGAT on September 27, 2017 at the city.
The RESOLVE Network’s 2017 Annual Forum on Confronting the Next Wave of Violent Extremism was hosted by the US Institute of Peace held on September 27, 2017. BIGD’s research fellow Dr. Wahid Abdallah along with Dr. C. Christine Fair, Associate Professor in the Peace and Security Studies Program, within Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service presented paper titled Islamist Militancy in Bangladesh: Public Awareness and Attitudes, where BIGD’s Senior Research Associate Ms. Syeda Salina Aziz and Dr. Ali Riaz, Professor of the Department of Politics and Government, Illinois State University presented paper on Democracy and Sharia in Bangladesh: Surveying Support at the RESOLVE Network’s 2017 Annual Forum on Confronting the Next Wave of Violent Extremism. The forum, hosted by the US Institute of Peace held on September 27, 2017, featured discussions from preeminent international scholars and experts from across the Network’s 20 plus partner organizations. In addition to offering opportunities to connect with leading thinkers, practitioners and policy makers engaged in policy responses to violent extremism, the day long series of thematic panels and roundtable discussions highlighted findings from a year-long study on the rise of violent extremism in Bangladesh and preview upcoming research on the politics of religion in the Lake Chad Basin region. Dr. Rahman, ED of BIGD also attended the forum.
Dr. Shahidul Islam Khan, Professor and Chairperson of EEE department of BRAC University, visited USA during 27 September to 5 November to attend the Editorial Board Meeting of IEEE Access (ieeeaccess.ieee.org/) the open access mega journal of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., USA. On his way to the Editorial Board Meeting at San Diego, he had a stopover in Atlanta.
He delivered a lecture in Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech), Atlanta on “How sustainable renewable energy is changing the face of developing countries: Bangladesh as a case study”. Two students, Mir Sohayeb Rabbi and Navila Sultana performed their thesis presentation required under BTE 450 (Research Project, Thesis) course on Wednesday, 27 September 2017 in Room UB 21511 of the MNS Department. The title of their thesis were “In silico structural analysis, physicochemical characterization and homology modeling of transmembrane protein 43 (TMEM 43)” and “Isolation of E.coli phages from environmental water samples and analysis of their effect on periodic epidemics of cholera”. Mir Sohayeb Rabbi was supervised by Ms. Eusra Mohammad and Navila Sultana was jointly supervised by Ms. Romana Siddique and Dr. Iftekhar Bin Naser from icddr,b.
The viva-voce examinations for the presentations was chaired by Professor Dr. A. F. M. Yusuf Haider and attended by Professor Dr. Aparna Islam, Ms. Romana Siddique, Ms. Eusra Mohammad and Ms. Shamira Tabrejee.
