Professor Selim Rashid, Professor of Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, currently Director of Research, BRAC University, conducted a Seminar on "Compact Township as a Strategy for Economic Development" on Thursday, 7 June 2001 in the Seminar Room of BRAC University. The Seminar was attended by a large number of academics and environmental specialists from different Universities and organizations.
Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, inaugurated a cyber-kiosk at the National Press Club along with a website (www.sdnbd.org) and a compact disk (CD) titled "Sustainable Development Information Bank".The cyber-kiosk was established for the journalists as well as the common people to celebrate World Environment Day 2001. National Press Club (NPC), Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) and Sustainable Development Networking Program(SDNP) of the United Nations Development Program(UNDP) jointly sponsored the program.
Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury said the number of Internet users across Bangladesh have reached 4 lakh mark and number of direct Internet subscriber is over 80,000. Terming June 6 as a special day in the IT (Information Technology) history of Bangladesh Professor J R Chowdhury recalled that Bangladesh was first directly connected to Internet on June 6, 1996. He noted that deregulation on VSAT has resulted in the per minute charge of Internet. Now some ISP's (Internet Service Providers) are charging 40 paisa per minute and soon they will charge only 25 paisa per minute or even lesser than that. He said internet-kiosk in all press clubs and news organizations across the country would greatly assist the working journalists.
BRAC University will provide full fee waiver in the first semester and thereafter depending on the satisfactory performance in each semester. Partial fee waiver will be granted to students based on merit and financial needs. The number of students receiving fee waiver would be 5% of the total students admitted.
Computer Club has been formed with Mr. Rafiqul Hasan Chowdhury, Faculty member of Computer Science Department as the Advisor and Mr. S. M. Mahabubuzzaman ID# 01101071, Student of Computer Science Department as Secretary.
Ms. Shenin Ziauddin has been made the Advisor of the English Debating Club.
Ms. Fahmida Tani Ahmed, Student ID# 01101065, has been nominated as the Secretary of the club.
Both the clubs shall meet once every week.
A meeting of the Admission Committee was held at the Conference Room of BRAC University on May 14, 2001. Prof. Abdur Rab chaired the meeting. Following decisions were taken regarding the Fall Semester:

Fuad H. Mallick, Ph.D. joined BRAC University as the Coordinator of Undergraduate Program in Architecture on May 13, 2001. Prof. Mallick was an Associate Professor in BUET and is currently on leave from Eastern Mediterranean University, North Cyprus.
Prof. J. R. Choudhury, the Vice Chancellor, was awarded a Gold Medal by Lions International (District 315) for his contribution to Science and Technology. The Gold Medal was handed over by Mr. A. S. H. K. Sadique, the Hon'ble Minister for Education, Government of Bangladesh, during the Annual Convention of Lions Club held at Hotel Sonargaon, Dhaka on May 11, 2001.
The President of the Governing Board of BRAC University and the Founder Executive Director of BRAC Mr. Fazle Hasan Abed attended the Board Meeting of Oxford International in Montreal, Canada on May 07-09.
Mr. Fazle Hasan Abed also participated in the Annual Meeting of the Consultative Group for Assisting the Poor (CGAP) of the World Bank as a Member of the Policy Advisory Group in Washington DC on May 23-25.
Mr. Rafiqul Hasan Chowdhury, Faculty member of Computer Science Department gave a presentation on PROBE, a computer-based test, on May 8, 2001. The presentation was attended by a large number of faculty members of BRAC University.
Dr. Wali I. Mondal of the Department of Management and Business, University of Redlands, California, USA gave a presentation on Effective teaching with Audio-Visuals and Multimedia Aides at 4 pm on Thursday, 3 May, 2001 in Hall Room #2 of BRAC University. A large number of faculty members attended the presentation.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. J. R. Choudhury, was invited to participate in the Seminar on Bangladesh on the Threshold of Twenty-first Century, organized by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh . The seminar was held at Asiatic Society Auditorium at Dhaka on 27-28 April, 2001. He presented the paper on Science & Technology outlining the progress in the Science & Technology sector in Bangladesh during the last three decades.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. J. R. Choudhury, was the Chief Guest at the Prize Distribution Ceremony of the First Inter-BIT Computer Programming Contest held at Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Chittagong on 28 April, 2001. Prof. Choudhury, who is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of BIT, Chittagong, complimented the organizers of the first such event for BIT students in the country. He lauded the performance of the 21 participant teams from the four BITs (viz. Rajshahi, Khulna, Gazipur and Chittagong) and hoped that they would be able to make their mark in the national, regional and international arena very soon. He also urged the BIT authorities to organize similar events in other BITs.
Dr. Jeff Unsicker, Academic Dean of School for International Training, Vermont, USA, called on the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, on April 21, 2001. Dr. Unsicker, a cofounder of the Global Partnership for NGO Studies, Education and Training programs in Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, briefed Prof. Choudhury about the activities of SIT in USA and other countries round the world. Dr. Mohammed Golam Samdani Fakir, Director of Training Division of BRAC and Academic Chair of the Global Partnership's postgraduate diploma in NGO Leadership and Management, based in Bangladesh, was also present. They discussed the prospects of collaboration between BRAC University and SIT in graduate education.
Prof. J. R. Choudhury, the Vice Chancellor, was the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony of the Software Exhibition organized by Bangladesh Association for Software and Information Services (BASIS) at the IDB Building, Agargaon, Dhaka on April 21, 2001. Around 10 software companies in Bangladesh exhibited their products and made presentations on the details of the software developed by them. Prof. Choudhury appreciated the efforts of BASIS members and hoped that they would be able to make the Bangladeshi presence felt in the global IT markets soon.
A Meeting with the Vice Chancellor in the chair was held at the University Conference room on April 21, 2001. All teachers of BRAC University attended the meeting. The meeting reviewed the progress of academic activities. It was decided that Ayesha Abed Library, BRAC University would be shifted from BRAC Center, 75 Mohakhali to the University Premises at Aarong House, 66 Mohakhali at the earliest.
