Dr. A A Ziauddin Ahmad, of the Department of Mathematics & Natural Science, BU visited AIT, Bangkok, Thailand on September 5, 2002 and had very fruitful discussion with Professor Mario T Tabucanon, Provost of AIT regarding respective programs of BU and AIT. They also discussed the possible future cooperation between BU and AIT. Professor Tabucanon informed that in the future some of BU graduates could be offered scholarships by AIT to pursue postgraduate studies at AIT in the relevant fields. Later Dr. Ziauddin had meetings with Professor Chongrak Polprasert, Dean, School of Environment, Resources and Development and Dr. Jayant K Routray, Program Coordinator, Rural Development, Gender and Resources. Both of them emphasized the need for establishing and strengthening of linkage programs between AIT and BU. Dr. Ziauddin also visited the Asian Center for Research on Remote Sensing, Space Technology Applications and Research Program and had meeting with Dr. Koki Iwao of the Center.

Siddiq Osmani is Professor of Development Economics at the University of Ulster, United Kingdom and a Visiting Professor at BRAC University, Dhaka. He obtained Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics and then worked at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, Dhaka and at the World Institute for Development Economics Research, Helsinki before joining the University of Ulster. He has published widely on issues related to poverty, inequality, hunger, famine, nutrition, and development problems in general and his books include Economic Inequality and Group Welfare and Nutrition and Poverty. He is currently serving as Special Adviser to the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights on matters related to economic rights. Professor Osmani joined BU on September 1, 2002.

A field trip to Mymensingh was organized by BU for the students of Bangladesh Studies on August 20, 2002. 38 students participated in the field trip, which was aimed at exposing the students to the problems of Rural Bangladesh, and how BRAC was involved in mitigating the sufferings of the people at grass roots level. Professor Nurul Islam, Chairperson, Department of Mathematics and Natural Science, Ms. Fouzia Huq, Accountant, BU and Mr Abdul Wohab, Teaching Assistant of Sociology accompanied the group.

BU Cultural Club organized their first cultural program on August 17, 2002 at 1:30 PM at BRAC Centre Inn Auditorium. About 400 students enjoyed the program. A large number of Faculty Members including Chairpersons and Administrative Staff of BU also attended the 3 hour long program. The program included Tagore, Nazrul, Patriotic & Modern songs (solo and duet), dance, poetry recitation and a short play.

Dr. Fuad H Mallick, Chairperson, Department of Architecture, BU attended a 3-day workshop on Reconstruction Needs Analysis, Planning and Implementation. The workshop was held in Bangkok from August 13 to 15, 2002 at The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, AIT. The World Bank and the Pro Vention Consortium organized the workshop. Participants from 14 different countries attended the Workshop. The workshop discussed issues related to priorities and methodologies in disaster reconstruction towards building less vulnerable structures, to resist future hazards. The existing methodologies of reconstruction planning were discussed and reviewed and the workshop concluded with the incorporation of new ideas generated by the participants.

A meeting was held between Professor Abdur Rab, Chairperson, Department of Management & Business and Mr. N. M. S. I. Arambepola, Deputy Program Manager, Asian Urban Disaster Mitigation Program of Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), Bangkok in the Conference Room of BU on August 12, 2002. Mr. Monzu Morshed, Coordinator, Disaster Management Project of CARE Bangladesh was also present in the meeting. The possibility of collaboration between BRAC University and ADPC in conducting joint programs on Disaster Management was discussed.

48 students of SSC 108 (Bangladesh Studies) went on a study tour to Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD), Comilla on August 10, 2002. Dr. Atiur Rahman, Senior Research Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) and Arifur Rahman, Teaching Assistant of Bangladesh Studies accompanied them. The students were given a presentation on the various programs of BARD and were also taken around a number of field activities of BARD.

A paper titled "Architecture of Light: Louis I. Kahn's National Assembly Building, Dhaka" by Dr. Zainab F. Ali of the Department of Architecture, BRAC University has been published in the "Design with the Environment" Proceedings of the 19th International Conference of PLEA (Passive and Low Energy Architecture) held at Toulouse, France in July 2002. The PLEA conference is the largest held on the subject of Low Energy Architecture.

The second summer Study Tour of Angan was of a building under construction, named the 'Novo theater Project' Architect Ali Imam, of the Department of Architecture, Ministry of Public Works who is the architect of the building talked about the project to the students at the site on July 25, 2002. The building has various spaces, including a large planetarium covered by a geodesic dome. The students also had an opportunity to observe the various structural systems of the building and the methods of construction.

Professor Firdous Azim completed her MA in English from Dhaka University in 1976. She received her Ph.D. in 1989 from Sussex University in UK. She joined Dhaka University as a lecturer in 1978 and was a Professor in the Department of English, Dhaka University. She has written and edited a number of books including: The Colonial Rise of the Novel (Routledge:1993), Infinite Variety: Women in Society and Literature (UPL:1995). She joined BRAC University as a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of English on July 1, 2002.
