Dhaka, 10 April 2016: 103 graduated midwives from “Developing Midwives Project” under BRAC University (BRACU) have passed the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC) license examination which was held on 26 February 2016. These midwives come from different parts of Bangladesh with very low socio-economic conditions. The Developing Midwives Project (DMP) has focused on strengthening midwifery services in under-served, disadvantaged rural and urban communities in the country by training girls from communities of greatest maternal health needs through a three years long Diploma in Midwifery course.
The Diploma in Midwifery education with 155 credits is a three-years academic program which follows a competency-based curriculum compliant with the standards of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and accredited by the Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC).
BRACU has been implementing the Developing Midwives Project since 2012 with a vision to reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity in Bangladesh. This project is funded by the UK government. Developing Midwives Project aims to develop a cadre of competent professional midwives to deliver quality community-based Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) services.
The Diploma in Midwifery education is approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of The Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
