The 23rd Journal Club Session, conducted by BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), was held on July 12, 2018. The presenters, Mr. Md. Mamunur Rashid and Mr. Imam Zafar Numanee, discussed an article titled “Listen to the Music: Using Songs in Listening and Speaking Classes” by Andrew Mobbs and Melinda Cuyul.
The purpose of choosing this article was to explore some novel ideas to incorporate music in ESL classroom. The article mainly shed light on concepts such as impact of music from a psycholinguistic viewpoint, music as a motivator, benefits and learning strategies of using music in the classroom, as well as a few drawbacks of utilizing music as a learning tool.
The presenters pointed out how using different genres of songs will not only engage the students’ interest but will also allow them to learn and explore different cultures of the world. Moreover, since it is rarely used in Bangladeshi classrooms, it may be a stepping stone towards the advancement of our education system.
The participants also discussed ideas regarding music as a teaching-learning tool. While some participants were unarguably in favour of implementing music in classrooms, others highlighted the possible challenges. Overall, the discussions were constructive as well as productive.
