BRAC University celebrated the 80th birthday of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, Founder & Chairperson, BRAC and Chairperson, Board of Trustees (BoT), BRAC University.
Vice Chancellor of BRAC University Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D. and a team of teachers and students greeted Sir Abed with flower bouquet, fruits and a greeting card. BRAC University students handed over to Sir Abed sketches of him done by them.
Sir Abed cordially thanked everyone and in his short speech, he reiterated that the purpose of University education should be to cultivate knowledge and do research and innovation. At the same time BRAC University should make future leaders for the country and society.
Professor Andaleeb informed Sir Abed that with the joint effort of the faculty members and students, BRACU is going ahead towards achieving Sir Abed’s vision of building an educated nation and a developed Bangladesh.
Earlier students of BRAC University organized four-day event named “Celebrating the Life and Work of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG” to celebrate his 80th birthday. It started with organizing a cricket camp for slum children, a friendly football match with autistic children. Students sold plants to donate money for social purpose. Photography and art exhibition, drama show and cultural programs were also organized by different students’ clubs.
In a public lecture session on 26 April in BRAC Centre Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, former Advisor of the Caretaker Government and a Professor of BRAC University presented a paper titled “Eighty Years of Poverty Alleviation: Changes and Challenges with reference to the role of Sir Abed and BRAC”.
In the Residential Campus in Savar of BRAC University, Sir Abed’s colleagues for many years shared their experience of knowing Sir Abed with the students. It was discussed that though Sir Abed is generally considered to be eminent and influential person, known all over the world, yet in real life he is simple, humble, compassionate and down-to-earth individual and these attributes are well grasped by those who know him for years. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students, teachers and staff of BRAC University to be inspired by his humane qualities and learn from those.
