The students of the Department of English and Humanities participated in the Asian English Olypmics 2018 held at Jakarta, Indonesia, from Feb 8-12, hosted by BINUS University. The English Olympics is one of BINUS University’s most prestigious events with more than 500 participants from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao, India, Bangladesh, Laos, Cambodia, and South Korea. This year’s theme was “Discover your Extraordinary” and the competition had different categories- debate, storytelling, radio drama, newscasting, etc.
BRAC University’s ENH department formed a group of three who participated in debate and newscasting at Jakarta, Indonesia. The participants in the debate team were Abrar Farhan Zama and Sumaiya Tasnim who successfully broke the preliminary roundabouts and stood first in Round 1 and stood second in round 2. As for individual speaker standing, Abrar Farhan Zaman stood 13th and Sumaiya Tasnim stood 26th amongst 114 students.
The participant for the newscasting section was Farhin Rahman who passed through the two rounds. A team of six participants who were Afsara Tasnim Dina, Fariha Tabassum Anika, Humaira Maisha Mahmud, Maisha Ferdawsi, Naveed Shadman Hossain and Samin Azhan Fariel took part in the radio drama section of the competition through online participation. BRAC Bank sponsored the ENH department for the entire competition.
