A daylong workshop on "Home Fortification of Weaning Food with Sprinkles: A New Strategy to Control Iron Deficiency Anemia among Infants and Young Children" was held at BRAC Centre on February 11, 2004. It was jointly organized by BRAC and the Institute of Public Health Nutrition (IPHN). The workshop reviewed the interventions for controlling iron deficiency anemia among children, shared experiences of the on-going sprinkles project and formulated a strategy of home fortification to improve iron and other micronutrient contents of weaning foods in Bangladesh. Mr. F. H. Abed, Chairperson of BRAC and President, Governing Board, BU chaired the first session of the workshop. Special guests included Professor Mizanur Rahman, Director General of Health Services, Dr. Salina Ahsan, Joint Secretary of the World Health Organization and Public Health, and Dr. Stanley Zlotkin, Head of the Department of GI/Nutrition at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. The workshop was sponsored by The Micronutrient Initiative Bangladesh and the Hospital for Sick Children. Keynote speaker Professor Stanley Zlotkin gave an exhaustive and informative presentation on the new sprinkles strategy, which has been endorsed by Professor Mizanur Rahman, Director General of Health Services. Mr. F H Abed recommended that public communication of the strategy and social mobilization take place as fast as possible. He also suggested that Professor Zlotkin develop a similar home-based iron deficiency remedy for women of reproductive age.
