The Department of Architecture, School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) at BRAC University recently hosted the 151st lecture of its Angan Lecture Series. The event held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, featured an engaging talk titled "স্মৃতি যখন স্থাপত্য-সঙ্গী: আমাদের গণ-স্মৃতির রূপ সন্ধান" by Architect Rajon Das.
Ar. Rajon Das graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2006 and established his practice, KSHITI STHAPATI, in Sylhet in 2008. His work focuses on reestablishing vernacular architectural features and integrating the socio-cultural archetypes of the Sylhet region in northeastern Bangladesh.
Throughout the lecture, Ar. Rajon highlighted some of his significant works, emphasizing his deep engagement with history and vernacular traditions. His projects reflect a strong nationalistic perspective, particularly those commemorating the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War and the 1952 Language Movement. In one such monument dedicated to the Liberation War, he boldly integrated thatching materials alongside concrete walls, showcasing his commitment to traditional building methods.
Beyond his commemorative works, he remains dedicated to designing for middle- and lower-middle-income communities, believing they embody both the realities and aspirations that shape society. Looking ahead, he aspires to explore the rural landscapes of Sylhet, reconnecting the lost architectural and cultural connections of the region.
The event was hosted by Zainab Faruqui Ali, Chairperson, Department of Architecture, SoAD, BRAC University. The first part of the event featured a presentation by the guest speaker, followed by a Q&A session with the students.
