With the idea of promoting and highlighting the traditional handloom Jamdani, a 5 day long exhibition “Jamdani Story” was organized at Gallery Cosmos 2 in New DOHS, Mohakhali, by two Assistant professors from the Department of Architecture BRAC University, Dr. Nandini Awal and Sheikh Rubaiya Sultana, along with her sibling Sheikh Sabia Sultana.
Renowned dance artiste Shamim Ara Nipa inaugurated the event on 2nd June 2017. Chairperson of Department of Architecture, BRAC University, Professor Adnan Morshed attended the event with his wife.
With the objective of merging the purity of traditional motifs with contemporary design, the unique Jamdani sarees displayed showed an excellent selection of color, fabric and design. The inception of the idea came about through a research on social business, where local artisans and their skills encouraged the designers to work on this unique initiative.
Co designer Sheikh Rubaiya Sultana stated, “With its rich heritage, Jamdani is an integral part of the Bengali culture and its rituals. However, the art of Jamdani designing is deteriorating due to the low income of the weavers who are not able to earn the bare minimum compared to the effort induced in making the Jamdani. We consider Jamdani as an art therefore the goal was to revive the passion for Jamdani and promote the weaving industry.”
