Dr. Seuty Sabur from the Economics and Social Sciences department of BRAC University and Dr Bedi Heather from the Department of Environmental Studies of Dickinson College organized a half day workshop titled Energy and Environment: Contemporary Experiences in Bangladesh on June 16, 2015 at GDLN Center, BRAC University. Honorable Vice Chancellor Professor Saad Andaleeb inaugurated the workshop. This workshop sought to understand the everyday ways that energy procurement and environmental change are experienced and contested by affected communities and the general public. This brought together international scholars like Nusrat Chowdhury, Assistant Professor at the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, Amherst College, local scholar Anu Muhammad, Professor at Jahangirnagar University, and activist Zonayed Saki, central leader of National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports. Abul Hassan Rubel, member of the central committee of Ganasamhati Andolon (Peoples Solidarity Movement), Kallol Mustafa, a member of National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports, a blogger and an engineer by profession to discuss issues pertaining to energy and environment.
In addition, the Anthropology student collective organized a session with Shahana Ghosh, a PhD student from the Yale University on June 25, 2015. She shared her methodologies and spoke about the interaction among the border side people of India and Bangladesh under growing militarization. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a seminar with Imam TalalEid from the USA on tolerance in Islam and role of the youth on June 27, 2015. On June 28, the faculty members, students of Anthropology and the staff have enjoyed their annual Iftar together.
