BRAC Business School arranged a session on “Teaching Pedagogy” as knowledge dissemination initiative open for all the faculties of BBS on Thursday, 29th September, 2016 at BRAC Business School conference room. Assistant Professor Ms. Mahreen Mammon has conducted a seminar about “Teaching Pedagogy-Knowledge Adviser Dr. Rahim B. Talukdar, Associate Professor and Head of Operations Dr. Tareque Aziz attended the session along with twelve faculties.
The session was facilitated by Ms. Mahreen Mamoon, Assistant Professor, BRAC Business School as knowledge sharing session from her experience with British Council’s workshop on the same topic being a teachers’ trainer. The session focused on the necessity of shifting from teacher-centered approach to more student-centered methods of delivering lectures. The ice-breaking session gives empowerment to the faculties to add an adjective to their first name- which gives them the onus to act on the adjective. Then they were asked to highlight the qualities of their favorite teachers- the discussion echoed around the group to be more like them so that their students would want to mention their names as best teachers. As the session got more in-depth, faculties were given a thorough insight on teaching as a profession and teaching as a passion as the role of a teacher is now more of a mentor, couch, nurturer and influencer. The global skills gap requires future generation to show competencies and skills to become confident global citizens. Faculties involved in critical thinking activities by solving a math puzzle in groups gave them a better understanding on the need of preparing quiz and lectures according to the core skills requirement and versatilities in classrooms. In 80-20 principle, the session divided the participants into two according to the courses they take- qualitative and quantitative. The outcome was identifying the vital actions needed to complement the trivial requirements to be absolutely ready and confident to teach the course effectively. The session concluded by showing various teaching, research and stress management techniques.
Participants took away teaching techniques, syllabus management, teaching methodology, career planning, research path and most importantly team building attitude from this session. The perfect mix of high profile professors to senior teachers to newly joined fresh minds gave the session perfect avenue to share knowledge and experience for the betterment of the students and the community at large. In the end, the seminar was depicted as a successful one and everyone was highly satisfied. They are looking forward to attend such sorts of seminar in future as well.
