A Training on Pedagogy was held on 25 and 26 October 2017, at BRAC University jointly organized by Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Professional Development Centre (PDC) of BRAC University. Experts in the field of teaching strategy, assessment and research along with approximately seventy BRACU faculty participated in the two-day program. Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor of BRAC University presented an inspiring talk on the need to make active learning as a mainstay in teaching practice at BRAC University. Pointing at his research findings, he drew a positive link between teacher engagement in classroom and active learning. He asked the teachers to be more empathetic to the students. He also expressed his hope that BRAC University will continue its rise as a world class university as it was evident in making its place among the top 400 universities in QS ranking of Asian universities. Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Professor Emeritus, BRAC University spoke on the importance of building a student centered Teaching philosophy in a teacher’s portfolio. He argued that the teacher portfolio is an integral part of teaching practice, a reflective exercise of teacher's own professional development. Dr. Ahsan, Director, PDC gave the welcome speech as well as presented on ways to reach to digital natives. He also conducted an activity on effective course design. On the second day of the training, Dr. Ansar Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, BRAC University spoke emphatically on engaging students in the classroom by making learning an interesting. He asked faculty to be creative in the way they can reach students meaningfully. Dr. Mohamed Foysol Chowdhury, Director, R&D, presented a passionate case why BRAC University should focus on faculty research to influence the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Dr. Siddiqur Rahman, Professor and Former Director, IER, Dhaka University took an informative session on effective assessment strategies, by explaining why we must measure learning goals. Finally Professor Nazmul Haq, IER took the concluding session on experiential learning and how to write research proposals. Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director of BRAC Institute of Languages and Prof. Md. Tafazzal Hussain, Ph.D., Director of IQAC also attended the program which was superbly facilitated by PDC team members, Shaheen Akter, Shireen Akhter, Muhammad Foysal Mubarak and Hamim Al Ahsan.
