Dr. Khonkar Islam, Associate Professor and Co-chair for the Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Information Sciences and Technology at George Mason University, Virginia, USA, conducted a master class on 30th October at BRAC University upon invitation from BRAC Business School. The main topic of his discussion was Communications and Networking in the IT field. Dr. Islam briefly stated his career achievements where he founded and now directs the Virtual Academy (VirtAc) at George Mason University; conducts research in distributed and peer-to-peer systems, overlay and wireless networks, network security, and distance education for instructor training and student learning. He earned his Ph.D. and B.S. at George Mason University, and M.S. at American University. He served as faculty of North South University in late 90s and then moved to GMU where he gradually built the Department of Information Sciences from scratch with 100 students to maximum 1500 students over the last 17 years at George Mason University, Virginia, USA.
Dr. Islam gave insight on how Networking works as the backbone on our daily life to communicate, work, play and learn. He elaborated on and how networking can produce value in organizations when there is Fault tolerance, Scalability, Quality of service and especially Security given the recent hacks in the Central Bank and Yahoo accounts. He gave a live demonstration on LAN through packet tracer Software which generated much enthusiasm for the students. Mr. Kamal Hossain, Senior Lecturer of Ecommerce and CIM and Mr. Nafiul Haque, Lecturer of Ecommerce and CIM, BRAC Business School were the organizers for the event.
