While policymaking is becoming incredibly technical, people’s voices are becoming lost while a lot of policies are focusing on political agendas and not real welfare, said a professor of the London School of Economics and Political Science.
A policymaker should spend more time giving thought to what real policy is, said the teacher, David Lewis, head of the Department of Social Policy, while delivering a lecture on “Peopling Policy Processes? Methodological Populism in the Bangladesh Health and Education Sectors”.
The Department of Economics and Social Sciences (ESS) of BRAC University (BRACU) organised the lecture at its Mohakhali auditorium on Thursday, 15 March 2018.
There could be meetings with policymakers where reality check findings from the people could come up, he added.
These discussions help develop students’ analytical skills as classrooms give a sound base of knowledge and comprehension, not real life experiences, said Vice Chancellor Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb PhD.
Founder and Chairperson of BRAC Sir Fazle Hasan Abed KCMG, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Ansar Ahmed, Treasurer Shib Narayan Kairy, Registrar Md Foyzul Islam and the ESS department Chairperson Professor Emeritus ATM Nurul Amin were present at the lecture.
A one-minute’s silence was observed for victims of the US-Bangla Airline crash in Nepal on 12 March 2018.
