Dr Mohammad Shahidul Islam has joined BRAC Business School (BBS) as an Assistant Professor. He received his PhD from the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) [(World Ranked No. 1 in Commerce, Management, Tourism and Services, URAP and Shanghai Global Ranking/2021), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) [QS World University Ranked No. 6 in Top 50 Under 50 (2021)]. He received his Master of Management (MM) (First class first) from Mahidol University [(Ranked No. 1 in Thailand, Round University Ranking (RUR) (2020)]. Before having the PhD and MM, Dr Islam received a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) and a Master of Arts in English (Language & Literature) from the University of Chittagong and a Post Graduate Diploma in International Relations from the University of Dhaka. His PhD and MM research topical areas included marketing, management, psychology, cross-culture, and communication.
Dr Islam has broad experience in research and teaching at home and abroad. As a comprehensive portfolio of a fully-funded PhD scholarship, he taught and advised international students, in marketing and management, from more than 15 countries. He was assigned as an international examiner of Micro Master in Marketing at SHTM, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Formerly, he held a senior responsible teaching and research position in a Govt. Hospitality Management School under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
Dr Islam was active to uphold the highest levels of professionalism and ethical conduct in all disciplines of the School. His role to promote the School in all circumstances to various audiences, as needed, was appreciated. He delivered excellence in all aspects of the student experience (academic and non-academic).
He has high impact publications as a first author in Elsevier (USA), such as Tourism Management (Impact Factor 10.967); International Journal of Hospitality Management (Impact Factor 9.237). He also has publications in the cutting edge Encyclopedia of Tourism Management and Marketing, Cheltenham, UK and Northampton, MA, USA: Edward Elgar Publishing. Dr Islam also published more than a thousand articles/literary pieces in national and international English dailies, newsletters, and magazines as a freelance author.
He has been a reviewer of International Journal of Hospitality Management (Elsevier) the USA, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, (Elsevier) the USA, Journal of Tourism, Culture & Communication (Cognizant Communication Corporation), the USA, APacCHRIE & EuroCHRIE Joint Conference, School of Hotel & Tourism Management, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and International Conference on Economic and Business Management, China. Dr Islam attended international graduate education and research conferences, seminars, and workshops in Thailand, Hong Kong and the USA. He travelled to Scotland, England, India, Bhutan, Thailand, Hong Kong and America for academic practice.
His research interests include underserved/ethnic minority/consumer behaviour, hospitality experience, service-dominant logic, cross-culture, communication, guest-employee well-being, emotional labour/intelligence, ethics and leadership, content marketing, aesthetics, impressions management, ethnography, phenomenology, focus groups, video elicitation.
