I am pleased to announce the following academic restructuring, effective 7 June 2020. The School of Engineering & Computer Science will be renamed the School of Engineering and will initially consist of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). The School of Sciences will be renamed the School of Data and Sciences and will consist of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS). Dr. Arshad Chowdhury will serve as the Dean of the School of Engineering and Dr. Mahbub Majumdar will serve as the Acting Dean of the School of Data & Sciences.
The objective of this restructuring is twofold. First, it aims to facilitate the development of a full-fledged engineering school in the university. The goal of the School of Engineering is to add other important engineering disciplines that are highly relevant to the country, such as mechanical, civil and environmental engineering. We will develop a complete, relevant engineering portfolio and make engineering a core capability of the university.
Second, this restructuring recognizes a worldwide trend that computer science has become an interdisciplinary, data-focused subject. The goal of the School of Data & Sciences is to become a hub of activity in computer science, artificial intelligence, computation, data science, mathematics, statistics and other related sciences. We will develop data and sciences as a key capability of the university.
Students in the EEE, CSE and MNS Departments will continue to take courses in their respective departments. The CSE Department, whose programs in CS and CSE are locally accredited, will continue to award degrees to its students in computer science and computer science and engineering, respectively. The same will be true of the MNS and EEE Departments.
