Curriculum Structure for Major in Economics

The undergraduate Economics curriculum (BSS in Economics) consists of general education courses, non-major area courses, major area courses and elective courses. A student may also be required to take non-credit, remedial courses in English and Mathematics to make up his/her deficiencies. The areas, number of courses and credit hours required for graduation are given below:

The 39 credits for GenEd courses is only applicable for students enrolled from Fall 2020 and onwards. Students following the 2013 until Fall 2017 sequence need to complete 21 credits of GenEd courses.

 

General Education (39 Credits)

Students must complete 39 credit hours in general education, which comprises of courses in English Language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Communities Seeking Transformation. To fulfill the requirement of general education, the students need to complete courses as per the GenEd courses  listed below. The BNG 103- Bangla Language and Literature course,  EMB 101, Emergence of Bangladesh, and HUM 103 - Ethics and Culture courses are compulsory while students may choose the additional 30 credit hours or 10 courses as recommended by the GenEd department. It is important for students to check the list of courses offered by the GenEd department each semester before the advising period.

[1] Students who started the program in Spring 2018 and later, (prior to Fall 2020) will also follow the current GenEd format and choose courses from the new list but they are required to complete 42 credit hours as per previous requirement.

Core Courses (48 Credits)

In addition to completing the general education requirements, students majoring in Economics must complete 48 credit hours of Core Economics courses. On the one hand, these courses include core components of economic theory, such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematical economics and econometrics. On the other hand, these Economics major courses also include specific applications of economics, such as, international trade, environment, monetary economics, etc. The list of core courses is provided below:

Elective Courses (33 Credits)

The 33 credit hours of elective courses can be selected from the Economics program or any other department, as long as they fulfill the prerequisites. In consultation with their academic advisor, a student may choose to take up a minor area of study like Business, Mathematics, English or Computer Science, along with the major in economics. They may also choose to take more elective courses from economics for a broader or more rigorous understanding of the discipline.

Electives from Economics: Elective courses in Economics are designed to enrich the background of the student in economic institutions and the analysis of policy problems. The requirement for Economics Electives can be chosen from the wide range of advanced theoretical and applied courses offered by the department, which include public economics, industrial organization, labor economics, monetary economics, agricultural economics, economic growth and development, international economics, health economics, environmental and resource economics and other courses. The elective courses in economics are offered on the basis of the availability of teachers as well as the required minimum number of students.

Electives from other Disciplines: For the BSS in Economics, students are free to take other introductory Social Science courses in Sociology, Political Science and Anthropology. These courses, listed below, establish a broad foundation in the Social Sciences and provide Economics students with a wider perspective of their discipline.

Curriculum Structure for Minor in Economics

In addition to a Major in Economics, the department also offers a Minor in Economics. Combining the Minor in Economics, with a Major in Business or English gives the students an added advantage in pursuing corporate, public and development sector careers. The requirements for completing a minor in economics are provided below.
