Students doing BS in microbiology can do a second major in biotechnology. For doing the double major in microbiology and biotechnology one has to complete extra 15 credits so that as a whole one has to complete a total of 151 credits. The required courses are given below.
Core Courses (39 credits):
BCH 101 Basic Biochemistry*
BCH 102 Biophysical Chemistry*
BCH 201 Human Physiology*
BCH 202 Enzyme and Enzyme Kinetics
BTE 203 Introduction to Molecular Biology (Eq to BTE 207 Introduction to Molecular Biology)
BTE 303 Basic Immunology (Eq to BCH 301 Basic Immunology)
BTE 307 Advanced Molecular Biology (Eq to MIC310 Advanced molecular Biology)
BTE 401 Bioinformatics*
**BTE 204 Fundamentals of Genetic Engineering
BTE 402 GMOs and Biosafety
**BTE 308 Plant Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering
BTE 403 DNA Fingerprinting and Molecular Diagnostics*
BTE 404 Bioprocess Technology*
** Students from microbiology background may be exempted to do prerequisite BTE 101 (Introduction to Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering) for relevant courses.
Elective courses (12 credits)
BTE 411 Molecular Virology and Oncology (Eq to MIC 301Virology)
BTE 313 Biomass and Biofuel*
BTE 317 Biostatistics*
BTE 312 Computer Application in Biotechnology*
BTE 315 Bioremediation and Biodeterioration*
BTE 415 Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology
BTE 417 Enzyme Biotechnology
* refers to courses common for undergraduate microbiology and biotechnology programmes.
‘Eq’ refers to equivalent courses for undergraduate microbiology and biotechnology programmes.
Internship (3 credits)
The internship should be in line with one of the majors or on some interactive topic involving the two majors.
Thesis (4.5 credits)
The thesis work should be in line with one of the majors or on some interactive topic involving the two majors.
Lab (6 credits)
As students who are doing major in microbiology are going through 4 different lab courses that include most of the major practical oriented problems of biotechnology so students are exempted from doing any extra lab course in biotechnology.
