Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is there any change in assigning an academic advisor?
Yes, in earlier semesters, advisors were assigned in each semester. From January 2021, a fixed academic advisor is assigned for you and the assigned advisor will advise you throughout your entire study period at Brac University. Any changes in the advisor will be notified to you.

2. What is the scope of an academic advisor?
You will find details in the ‘EEE Department Academic Advising and Performance Monitoring’ file. The link is given at the end of this document in the Necessary Documents’ section.

3. Who should I first communicate with for any kind of advising?
With your advisor.

4. Which email address should I use for any kind of communication?
You must use your university provided G suite email with clearly written your name, student id and subject.

5. How often should I meet my advisor?
You should meet your assigned academic advisor once per semester at the time of course advising and registration period. Also, you are strongly encouraged to meet your respective advisor to receive necessary assistance regarding your academic matters, as needed.

6. Can I complete registration without approval from my advisor?
No, you must take approval from your advisor for completing your registration.

7. How long generally it may take to get a reply from my advisor?
Generally, you should get reply within 72 hours.

8. I can’t reach my advisor through email as well as physical meeting. What should I do now?
Please wait for the response from your advisor. If it is very important and you cannot get a response within 72 hours, please send the email to DCO and keep your advisor as CC. DCO will contact your advisor.

9. I am not happy with the advising from my advisor. Advisor has no clear idea about my query. I am seeking permission to change my advisor.
Please forward the reply from your advisor to undergraduate program coordinator and keep your advisor as CC.

10. I am happy with my progression with low grade in a specific prerequisite course. However, my advisor does not want to allow me for the next level course with this low grade of the prerequisite course. What should I do now?
If you fulfil the prerequisite requirement of a course, you can definitely take the course with this low grade of prerequisite course. However, if your advisor feels, upgrading the result of this basic course may help you for future courses, then your advisor can only advise you to repeat the course.

11. Should I search in the FAQs for my query before sending an email to my advisor?
Of course. You should go through all resources i.e. FAQs, Curriculum, Degree Progression Checklist, Elective Course offering plan before sending an email to your advisor. Also, you should regularly check the emails from department.

12. Where can I get the details of advising and the flowchart of the advising process?
You will find details in the ‘EEE Department Academic Advising and Performance Monitoring’ file. The link is given at the end of this document in the Necessary Documents’ section.

13. I don’t see my name in the advisee list. What do I have to do?
Please contact undergraduate program coordinator.

14. What are the different versions currently exist for BSEEE and BSECE programs?
At present, there are three (3) different versions of BSECE programs available for the students, depending on their enrollment semester into the program
Version V1: For Students intake up to Spring 2018
Version V2: For Students intake from Summer 2018 to Fall 2019
Version V3: For Students intake from Spring 2020 and onwards

15. What is the difference between Version V1 & V2?
In version V2, BNG103: Bangla Language & Literature has been added as University GED requirement.
16. What is new in Version V1 and Version V2?
There are few changes. Most notable is the EEE400/ECE402 courses. The EEE400/ECE402 course is newly titled as Final Year Design Project. There are some changes in course prerequisite of several courses and recommended sequences of the course sequence.

EEE 322: Power System I lab course has been added for the regularly offered course EEE321.
ECE445: Digital Communications and ECE446: Digital Communications Laboratory are now core courses for both V1 and V2.

(Note: Earlier, ECE 445 was core course for Students intake up to Fall 2018 and it was not core course for Students intake from Spring 2019 and onwards). Since Students intake from Spring 2019 and onwards have not taken this course yet, there should not have any impact of this course as core course in study planning).
You will also find new elective area and new courses under different elective areas.

17. There are some changes in the course sequence. How can I follow this one?
Please try to follow as much as possible from now on otherwise you may not be able to take the Final Year Design Project (EEE400/ECE402) course in time.

18. Where can I get program course listing, course prerequisite and course sequence?
You may find through the download link at the end of this FAQs document in the Necessary Documents’ section. Remember you have to follow your version of the curriculum.

19. What is the recommended course sequence/flowchart?
Course sequence means the order you should follow for completing your courses, i.e. in which semester you have to complete which courses.

20. How important to follow the course sequence/flowchart?
It is very important to follow this course sequence as recommended in the curriculum if you wish to complete the requirements of your program in four years.
Remember, failure to follow the course sequence could delay your Final Year Design Project course.

21. I am unable to follow the course sequence as I did not complete some courses of the earlier semesters. What should I do now?
You should take those courses first which were supposed to complete earlier.

22. What are the maximum and minimum credits I can take per semester?
Regular students should take Maximum 15 credits and Minimum 9 credits of course per semester.

23. I want to take less than 9 credits in a semester. What should I do now?
Taking less than 9 credits in a semester is only allowed in an exceptional situation. Please email your advisor for approval with valid reasons and further processing.

24. I want to take more than 15 credits in a semester. What should I do now?
Taking more than 15 credits in a semester is only allowed upon strong recommendation from your advisor. If your advisor recommends considering your progress and CGPA, then only you can take more than 15 credits in a semester.

25. My CGPA is not good and there are more than 15-18 credits left. Can I take this remaining credits in one semester? Otherwise, it would take one more semester.
Please contact your advisor for discussion.

26. I have added a course for the following semester during my pre-registration. However, I could not able to pass its pre-prerequisite course which I found after final grade published? What should I do now?
If you have any retake course, then complete this first. You should not take any course if its pre-requisite is not complete. Your advisor will drop the course during advising time if its pre-requisite is not completed.

27. I find different course codes for the same course. Which one should I take?
In USIS, you may find different course codes for the same course. You have to take the course with the course code following your version of curriculum.
For example: For Electrical Circuits I and Electrical Circuits I Laboratory, you will find the following codes. I just mentioned who will take which course code
EEE201 and EEE202 (For EEE students V1 and V2)
ECE201 and ECE202 (For ECE students V1 and V2)
EEE101 and EEE101L (For EEE students V3)
ECE101 and ECE101L (For ECE students V3)

28. Can I take a course following the course code of another version of the curriculum?
No, you have to follow the course code of your version of curriculum.

29. Can ECE students take course with equivalent EEE code or vice versa?
No, ECE students have to take courses with the ECE codes. If you need any help due to seat limitations, your advisor will help you. There is no way to take equivalent courses with EEE codes.

30. Can I take any course within my curriculum (e.g. EEE361: Data Communication) with equivalent CSE code (e.g. CSE320) or other department course code?
No, you must take EEE361 for above case. For taking any course, you have to follow the course code which is written in your program curriculum.

31. What is the retake, repeat and probation policy?
Please see on the Brac University website.

32. What is new about EEE400/ECE402?
This course has been redesigned as a major design project course, named Final Year Design Project (FYDP) course . The course offering mode, prerequisite, outcomes, assessment methods etc. have been revised accordingly.

The one-year (3 semesters) long design project course is divided into three components (P, D and C) and will be offered in three consecutive semesters.

Students should complete at least 100 credits and all required prerequisite courses in order to eligible to take the Final Year Design Project course.

Following table shows the final-year design project course for various curriculum version of BSEEE and BSECE program starting from Spring 2021 semester.

33. Which courses are the prerequisites for taking Final Year Design Project course from Spring 2021 Semester?
Please check prerequisites and credit requirements in the flowchart section.

34. Can I start Final Year Design Project (EEE400/ECE402) course before 10th Semester?
If you complete all the prerequisites and credit requirements before 10th semester, you can definitely take EEE400/ECE402 before 10th semester.

35. I didn't follow the course sequence in the earlier semesters. I was planning to take EEE400/ECE402 and few core courses parallel. What should I do now? If I don't do this, I can't complete my graduation within 12th semester.
Addressing this issue will be depended on several factors including your enrollment year, the credit hours you completed etc.
Please contact your advisor to discuss your case.

36. Can I take the repeat/retake core courses with the EEE400/ECE402 course?
Yes, you can. But there may be a limit of number of courses/credit hours that you can take simultaneously along with your project work. Please contact your faculty advisor before taking repeat/retake core courses with the EEE400/ECE402 course.

37. I wanted to do thesis under EEE400/ECE402. Since the EEE400/ECE402 course is now project based, how can I do thesis?
All undergraduate students of BSEEE and BSECE program must need to take EEE400/ECE402 Final Year Design Project course as mandatory requirements to complete their degree requirements.

There is no thesis option in EEE400/ECE402 anymore. However, there is a new 3 credit hours Elective course EEE498/ECE498 Directed Research.

If you are interested to do thesis or independent research work under a course in addition to project course, you may take this EEE498/ECE498 Directed Research course as one of your elective courses and do independent research/thesis work supervised by a faculty. Interested students may contact respective Academic Advisor to know details about it.

38. I have already completed EEE400/ECE402 Project/Thesis course or currently taking it. Do I have to do Final Year Design Project again?
No, if you have already completed EEE400/ECE402 Project/Thesis course or currently taking this course under old system, then you do not have to worry about the change.

39. Should I add Final Year Design Project Course during my pre-registration?
Yes, you have to add this course during your pre-registration.
For 1st semester of your FYDP course, you have to add EEE400P (EEE students)/ECE402P (ECE students) during pre-registration.
For 2nd semester of your FYDP course, you have to add EEE400D (EEE students)/ECE402D (ECE students) during pre-registration.
And for 3rd semester of your FYDP course, you have to add EEE400C (EEE students)/ECE402C (ECE students) during pre-registration.

40. What is the FYDP course code in the Version 3 curriculum?
EEE499 (EEE students) and ECE499 (ECE students).

41. How can I plan for taking elective course?
You can plan for elective courses based on the Year-wise Elective Course Offering Plan. You can check the frequency of elective course offering.

42. Where can I get the Year-wise Elective Course Offering Plan?
Generally it is emailed to you before the start of a year. Alternatively, you can get it through the download link. The link is given at the end of this document in the Necessary Documents’ section.

43. What are the criteria for completing elective course requirements?
The elective courses are divided into special areas namely: Power, Electronics, Communication and Network, Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Interdisciplinary and Emerging Topics. Students should follow the following rules while taking to fulfil the elective course requirements:
i. Minimum 9 credits (3 theory courses) must be from one of the areas (excluding Interdisciplinary/Emerging Topics) chosen as specialization
ii. The remaining credits may be taken from any of the areas
iii. Students must take relevant laboratory course, if any, associated with any theory courses

44. What is the criteria for completing double major/concentration?
Complete a minimum of 6 non-overlapping courses (18 credits) and associated labs from two specialized areas. Among these: minimum of 3 non-overlapping courses (9 credits) and associated labs from one specialized area and a minimum of 3 non-overlapping courses (9 credits) and associated labs from different specialized area.

45. I have completed 10.5 credits (3 courses including lab) from one specialized area (e.g. Electronics) and remaining 4.5 credits I want to complete from different area (e.g. Communication). Can I complete my elective requirement by this way?
Yes, it is absolutely fine.

46. Can I complete my 15 credits elective course requirement by taking all elective courses from one specialized area?
Yes, you may complete elective requirement from one specialized area (excluding Interdisciplinary/Emerging Topics).

47. Can I take any course as Course Outside Major Area (COMA) for completing remaining credits of program elective requirements?
Starting from Fall 2020, the EEE department has discontinued the terminology “Course Outside Major Area (COMA)” for program electives. Rather, these courses will be considered as course outside the listed areas of specialization.
Students should take minimum 9 credits (3 theory course) from one of the areas (chosen as specialization) defined under program electives. The remaining credits may be taken from any of the areas under program electives. However, in some cases, to fulfil the remaining program elective credits, student may take non-overlapping course (3 credits) offered by the EEE department or prior approved by the EEE department. Here the important aspect is any course outside the enlisted program elective areas should be related to the program and should be approved prior to use for completing remaining credits of program elective requirements.
Please discuss your faculty advisor before adding any course that is outside of any of the listed areas of specialization under program electives.

48. I have completed an elective course without its associated lab. Now I found, it will be offered again after 2/3 semesters. I am planning to complete my degree by next semester. Can this elective course without associated lab be considered within 15 credits elective requirement, otherwise I have to wait one more semester for this lab course only.
No, you must complete course as well as its associated lab, if you want to include the course within your 136 credits minimum requirement.

49. For GED open elective COD course, I want to take a course which is not listed in the curriculum (V1 and V2)? What should I do?
You can take any non-overlapping course (minimum 3 credit hours) from other departments. Here the important is course must be non-overlapping.

50. For COD course, I have taken two courses (e.g. ECO 101 and ECO 102) from the same departments? Can I take two courses from same department?
Yes, you may take. Here the important is you should complete the pre-requisite of any course (minimum 3 credit hours).

51. Is it mandatory to participate in course signup?
Yes, it is mandatory.

52. When and how I have to participate in course signup?
You will be notified through your BracU email.

53. What courses should I select during course signup?
You have to select the courses according to the pre-advising plan you received from your advisor during advising week.

54. What can be happened if I don’t participate in course signup?
Based on your signup, the number of sections in a course are offered. Therefore, those who participate in course signup will be in priority for getting the course.

55. What to do during pre-registration?
During pre-registration, you have to login USIS and add your course for the upcoming semester.

56. What courses should I select during pre-registration?
You have to select the courses according to the course signup you participated in.

57. I can’t find any course of 8 character course code (e.g. EEE103IL) in the USIS? Is it not offered?
Temporarily, you will find course of 8 character code (e.g. EEE103IL) as 7 character code (e.g. EEE103L) in USIS.

58. There are almost 10-12 sections for CSE330 in USIS. Can I add any section from these?
No, you can’t select any section of CSE330. Which section you have to select, you will be notified through email before pre-registration.

59. Can I add a course with the overlapping of my another course class/exam time?
No, you can’t take.

60. During pre-registration, I found course section is already full. I need an extra seat. What should I do now?
Please email your advisor in the final advising week.

61. I couldn’t do my pre-registration due to some reasons? How can I do this now?
Pre-registration is mandatory for all students. However, if you can’t do your pre-registration in the designated slot due to any reason, please wait for the 2nd phase of pre-registration. If you can’t do in the 2nd phase of pre-registration, then wait for the advising week. However, there may have a chance of not getting your desired course and section.

62. Can I request my advisor for add/drop during pre-registration?
No, you can’t send request to your advisor for course add or drop during pre-registration (both initial phase and phase 2). If you need any changes after initial phase, you will get opportunity to do this during phase 2 pre-registration. After phase 2, your access will be closed. See the timetable on the website.
Only during final advising week, your advisor will help you to add or drop if further changes required.

63. Can I change my section during advising week by my advisor?
Since you had access to change your section as your wish during initial phase and 2nd phase of pre-registration, therefore you are strongly discouraged to change your course section during advising unless you have a strong reason.

64. Is it necessary to take approval from my advisor during advising week for completing my registration?
Yes, it is it necessary to take approval from your advisor during advising week for completing of your registration process. You should follow the guidelines from your advisor regarding the approval process.

65. I don’t have any add/drop issue in advising week. Do I also meet my advisor during advising week?
Yes, you have to meet. Meeting your advisor during advising week is not only for add/drop course, but also for planning your following semester courses at the same time.

66. What will be the medium of meeting my advisor during advising week?
It depends on advisor. Please contact your advisor. However, in most cases during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the preferable medium would be through on-line.

67. What is Degree Progression Checklist (DPC)?
The DPC allows you to check the course requirements that are needed to graduate in your degree program as per the curriculum. Based on the completion of the checklist, it shows you what course requirements you have already completed, what course requirements you still need to complete, and what is currently in progress.

68. Where can I find the DPC?
You can get it through the download link given at the end of this document in the Necessary Documents’ section.

69. How can I complete DPC?
All the guidelines are presented in the ‘Guidelines for Completing DPC’ file. You can get the form through the download link given at the end of this document in the Necessary Documents’ section.

70. Where I have to submit DPC?
Submission link is provided in the DPC form. Submission through email is not accepted.

71. Is it mandatory to submit DPC?
Yes, it is mandatory.

72. When I have to submit DPC?
You will be notified through email.

73. Just now I have completed my final semester. Do I need to submit DPC?
No, you don’t need to submit DPC. You just proceed with your Degree Completion Form

74. Do I need to submit degree completion form after completing all degree requirements?
Yes, you have to submit Degree Completion Form in order to verify and confirm that you have met all the requirements of the degree.

75. Where can I get degree completion form?
You may contact our department coordination officer.
