2020 Forum on Faith and Education in Bangladesh: Pathways to Pluralism

January 7th, 2019 - 9:30am to January 7th, 2020 - 5:30pm On the 7th of January 2020, Center for Peace and Justice (CPJ) is organizing a day-long Forum titled: "Faith and Education in Bangladesh: Pathways to Pluralism." At the event, we will explore the role of faith-inspired organizations in education and the challenges and possibilities towards pluralism through education. CPJ is in collaboration with the World Faiths Development Dialogue at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs at Georgetown University, where we explore important issues at the intersection of faith, development and social cohesion. In 2019, we have focused on education and will offer our findings at the event. In addition, the forum will bring together regional and global experts with long-standing experience in education policy and development.
The speakers at the forum are:
- Dr. Stephen Heyneman, Professor Emeritus of International Education Policy, Vanderbilt University – Dr. Heyneman served the World Bank for 22 years. He has extensive research and training experience in educational quality and design, policy and strategy, spanning the Middle East, North Africa and 27 countries of Europe and Central Asia. Dr. Heyneman has over 200 publications in his areas of expertise.
- Dr. Jamhari Makruf, Lecturer and Deputy Rector of Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah, Indonesia – Professor Makruf is a reputed researcher on Islamic studies. He was appointed to head Indonesia’s National Islamic Tertiary Education Reform Taskforce and was a Miegunyah Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He currently facilitates the interdisciplinary research activities of PPIMUIN Jakarta, which are designed to enhance the mutual understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims. He is the author of numerous publications on Islamic education.
- Dr. Sudipta Roy, Faculty Fellow in Education, Colby College USA - Dr. Roy is currently co-leading a three-year-long collaborative research program at the World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD) at Georgetown University and the Center for Peace and Justice at Brac University.
- Professor Katherine Marshall, Executive Director, World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD), Professor of Development, Conflict and Religion, Georgetown University, USA – Professor Marshall has served at the World Bank in various leadership positions on development issues. She has also led the World Bank’s faith and ethics initiative. She currently serves as a senior fellow at the Berkeley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs and is on the boards of several NGOs
The forum promises to be an exciting day to think about two very important and interconnected issues of education and diversity, not just in Bangladesh but also globally.
