Workshop 1: Teaching Writing
Teaching writing can be a challenge for university educators of all subjects. As educators with degrees we are expected to be good writers, but how does one go about teaching students to write well? This interactive presentation will offer a structure in which to help students improve their writing. These five points will be covered: (1) research findings on student writing, (2) the use of the Rhetorical Pyramid in writing, (3) a simple, 8-stage writing process to help students structure their approach to their writing assignments, (4) methods to prevent plagiarism, and (5) the association of reading to student writing.
Workshop 2: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in University Instruction
If we are tasked with offering some, or all, of our courses in English, the challenge can be in understanding how to scaffold our instruction to assist our students in acquiring both the necessary course content and improved language skills. This workshop examines the theoretical constructs of CLIL as well as giving participants practical guidance in integrating language support structures into their content courses. Language instructors will benefit, too, in learning practical application of language support that will assist their students when they enroll in content courses taught in English.
Special Presentation: Getting Published in Academic Journals – a Template for Success
Academic exist in a world of “Publish or Perish;” therefore, the drive to conduct research and publish in good journals is a constant presence in the lives of most academics. This short presentation will draw on the presenter’s experiences as both a published author of numerous books, monographs, and textbooks as well as editor of academic books and publications.
