Abstract:
The practice of diagnostic microbiology has been improved tremendously over the last two decades. The greatest challenges in clinical microbiology are quick turnaround time, quality control/quality assurances, and bio-safety. This can be achieved through critical audits of clinical samples, and a process of continuous improvement. At present the role of clinical microbiology is shifting towards panel based molecular testing, meta-genomics and bioinformatics (big data). Clinical Diagnostic Companies are playing a major role in this endeavour. Recent trends includes implementations of multiplex PCR to mass spectrometric identifications of microbes. These methods allowing improved sensitivity, specificity and turnaround time in clinical laboratories. These advanced technology also helping to identify new, unknown or non-cultivable emerging pathogens. Clinical Diagnostic Companies are also playing a major role in marketing point of care testing to primary care physicians. An attempt will be made to provide the chronological development of clinical microbiology as well as uses of modern technology in clinical diagnostic laboratories.
Short Biography of Dr. Morshed
Dr. Morshed is a public health clinical microbiologist at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he is Head of the Zoonotic and Emerging Pathogens section. He is also a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia. In both his public health and his academic roles, Morshed has excelled, receiving recognition from peers and colleagues across Canada, the United States as well as internationally. Besides providing advice to clinicians in his areas of expertise (emerging infections such as syphilis, Lyme disease and other zoonotic – diseases of animals that can infect humans), he has also added significantly to the general knowledge and understanding of these diseases with more than 100 refereed scientific publications. He also has served on the CCM Executive since 2012. Dr. Morshed received an Excellence in Clinical Services Award from UBC’s Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine in 2016, as well as being named a winner in the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards in 2017.
