Architecture faculty wins UIA 2030 Award

Co-creation and rejuvenation of urban spaces near the Nobogonga river in Jhenaidah designed by Co-Creation Architects and Platform of Community Action and Architecture, POCAA was named the winner in the 5^th Category: Access to Green & Public Space SDG – 11 of the UIA (Union of International Architects) 2030 Award. The winning team lead is Khondaker Hasibul Kabir, faculty member of the Department of Architecture, SoAD, Brac University. The project has contributed significantly to provide access to green & public space, consistent with the principles underpinning Target 11.7 of SDG-11.

The project has successfully established an intensive dialogue between the architects, the local municipality and the local community in order to revitalize a series of derelict and disconnected water bodies and adjacent spaces, re-establishing a vital link with the local river. The community-driven process reflects the core values of Co-Creation Architects, Platform of Community Action and Architecture (POCAA) and Community Architects Network (CAN). Community participatory design and is also greatly emphasized in the teachings of the Department of Architecture, SoAD. To date, the project comprises of two ghats – steps leading down to platforms at the river, with adjacent walkways – and the opening of pedestrian pathways leading to them. Locally available materials such as brick and concrete were used in the simple, contextual designs, all built by local builders and masons.The site-specific projects retain all existing trees and vegetation.Future phases focus on more public use of the river area with walkways, gardens, cultural facilities and environmental efforts to increase biodiversity in the river.
