BIL Faculty Members Publish a Book Chapter
BIL faculty members Mohammad Aminul Islam and Md Mahbubul Islam, Senior Lecturers, have published a book chapter entitled “Protecting Student Retention through eMentoring during a Pandemic” in an edited book published by Palgrave Macmillan. The title of the book is “Agile Learning Environments amid Disruption: Evaluating Academic Innovations in Higher Education during COVID-19” which primarily focuses on the innovative approaches adopted by practitioners in higher education as coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. BIL Faculty Members Assists in the Assessment of English of the Diploma in Midwifery Programme
BIL faculty members Md Mahbubul Islam and Mohammad Aminul Islam assisted in assessing English for the Diploma in Midwifery students of the 3rd and 6th semesters. On the 27th and 28th of December, 2022, they conducted viva voce for the students as mentioned above at the Dhaka Centre of Developing Midwives Project (DMP), James P Grant School Public Health, Brac University.
Journal Publication
Srabosti Saha, Lecturer at Brac Institute of Languages (BIL), Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, Senior Lecturer at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), have jointly published a paper titled “Translanguaging Pedagogy in the EAP Classroom of Private Universities in Bangladesh” in the Scopus-indexed journal called Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice. The paper discusses translanguaging, which has become a popular topic in recent decades due to the fact that it encourages people to use existing language and experience while learning a new language. This makes it an essential term in the field of language acquisition. The paper also showcases the attitudes of different stakeholders (parents, students & teachers) of the private university towards translanguaging.

Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed attends Students’ Conference 2022 at AIUB as Special Guest
Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Senior Director, BIL attended a students’ conference titled “Discover English 2022: Student Conference on English Language and Literature” held on December 8, 2022, at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) as a Special Guest. This conference was jointly organized by the Department of English, AIUB and TESOL Society of Bangladesh, a voluntary association of English teachers.
The motto of the conference was: A conference by the students and for the students! A total of 126 research papers from BA, MA, and MPhil level students from the disciplines of English Language and Literature of 24 public and private universities across Bangladesh were presented at this day-long conference. The event was organized to foster student leadership and provide a platform for the students to present their research in the disciplines of English language and literature.
Professor Dr Biswajit Chanda, a Member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Mohammad Shams Ud Duha, PhD student at Purdue University, USA, Lecturer (on-leave) BIL, Brac University, also an alumnus of MA-TESOL of BIL, Brac University, delivered the keynote speech titled “Why Do Research?”
11 students from the MA-TESOL program of BIL, Brac University presented their research papers at this conference. Two BIL faculty members, Ms Hasna Khanom, Senior Lecturer and Ms Tarannum Fatema Chowdhury, Lecturer attended the conference as adjudicators for several parallel sessions.
In her speech, Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed highlighted the importance of teacher education programs and student research. She also emphasized the role practical teaching experiences have in bridging the gap between theory and practice of English language teachers in Bangladesh, especially through practicum courses of the teacher education programs such as the one MA-TESOL in BIL offers.
In her concluding speech, Ms Hasna Khanom, Senior Lecturer, Brac Institute of Languages, Brac University, and the General Secretary of TESOL Society of Bangladesh, inspired the student participants to contribute meaningfully to the English teaching and learning landscape of Bangladesh through their teaching, research and commitment to the social welfare.
