BRAC University celebrated International Women’s Day 2022 through a number of activities at its Mohakhali campus auditorium on 8 March, 2022. The programmes provided an opportunity to uphold women's achievements and acknowledge their immense contributions to the world. The theme this year was “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”.
A talk titled “Her Era” was presented by club Monon with Zainab Faruqui Ali, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Architecture, and eminent theatre and film artist Ms. Rokeya Prachy as guests of honour. Ms. Prachy highlighted the importance of women empowerment in society. Society had evolved a lot with women being encouraged by their families to pursue their dreams. Women now have more freedom in taking their own decisions but violence against women, sexual harassment at workplaces and discrimination over wages continue to prevail almost everywhere, she said. Pointing to students attending the event, Ms. Prachy said young people have to understand that no nation can prosper keeping women lagging behind. She urged the government to be stringent in enforcing laws over securing women’s rights.
BRAC University has been maintaining a strong policy against all forms of sexual harassment and gender discrimination since its inception, said Professor Ali. The university is working tirelessly to create awareness on gender equity in every sphere of society. Professor Ali urged parents to encourage their daughters to be free thinkers so that they can independently take their own decisions.
The event came to an end with a cultural program with the participation of students from different departments.
