BRAC University Global Model United Nations (BUGMUN) 2017 was held for the third time from 27th to 31st of December for five consecutive days. Modelled after the UN, BUGMUN is an educational simulation that brings together students as delegates, from various countries in one place to discuss key global issues for possible solutions.
This year, it facilitated 12 committees, introducing 2 new committees, UNPBC and SPECPOL for the first time, and approximately 350 delegates and executive board members, with the theme 'Conforming to Egalitarianism: Provision for Consolidated Global Prosperity’. The event started off at Army Golf Garden, where the opening ceremony took place.
Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, PhD, Vice Chancellor of BRAC University was present as the Chief Guest. Other honorable guests included Dr Mirza Azizul Islam and Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, both Professors of BRAC University Business School. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, the Deputy Managing Director of Bashundhara Group as well as AM Shakil Faizullah, Communications Manager under the Communication, Advocacy and Partnership Section of UNICEF Children’s Fund also graced the momentous occasion as special guests.
From the opening venue, the delegates and the executive board mebers were taken to BRAC University’s residential campus at Savar, where the rest of the conference were to take place.
Each day, two to three committee sessions were held during the day and a recreational social event was organized after sunset.
On day one, upon reaching the venue, the Opening Plenary and a workshop on MUN took place.
Day two followed with the regular routine of committee sessions, then a futsal tournament and after sunset, a Concert, titled 'Reverberate' was organized where popular musicians and bands performed on stage, namely, Headline, Conclusion, Onuronon, AvoidRafa, and Shunno.
Day three followed the same pattern with the committee sessions during the day, futsal matches and a social event at night. The social event for the night was the Delegates’ Night, titled 'After Hour Buzz’ which provided an opportunity for the delegates and organizers to perform on stage and network. Afterwards, delegates formed a human chain and formed ‘BUGMUN 2017’ with their phone's flashlights in the foggy night.
The final segment took place at BRAC CDM, after which a farewell was held for the delegates. During the farewell, certificates and crests were distributed by Mr. Hashmi Rafsanjani, Country Marketing Consultant at Google Bangladesh; Mr. Moniruzzaman, National Information Officer, UNIC; Mr. Rehan Ahmed, Campus Superintendent; and Ms. Adiba Nowshin, Lecturer, Department of ESS.
On the fifth and final day, The delegates were deported to Dhaka shortly after the breakfast in BRAC's transport. The sole purpose of BUGMUN is engaging the youth in matters of the world, while building their leadership, communication, networking and diplomatic abilities.
