The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS) at BRAC University recently organized the "Bangladesh Solid Waste Management Seminar-2024." This event was held in partnership with the Japan Society of Material Cycle Waste Management (JSCWM) and in collaboration with the JICA Bangladesh Office, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Dr. Moushumi Zahur, Assistant Professor of the MNS Department, moderated the seminar.The seminar served as a platform for experts, policymakers, and practitioners to address the critical challenges and opportunities in solid waste management in Bangladesh, fostering sustainable practices and innovative solutions.
Professor Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus at C3ER, BRAC University, graced the seminar and delivered a brief yet inspiring speech. Joining him at the opening session were Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences, and Dr. Md. Firoze H. Haque, Chairperson of the MNS Department.
Key discussions included the Solid Waste Management (SWM) system of Dhaka City, JICA's cooperation in formulating two SWM master plans for Dhaka, current JICA projects for Southern Chattogram's SWM, and overall approaches and challenges in SWM.
The seminar aimed to provide practical insights to stakeholders and field-level officers while enhancing the understanding of university students on this crucial issue.
