BRAC University team shines at International Rounds of Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, 2024
Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, 2024 has been held every year in two segments- the national round and international round. This year, the team of BRAC University was formed of three final year students of School of Law, Niaz Mohammad, Taskin Tanika and Fahim Abrar Abid. They were guided and coached by Mr. Md. Mostafa Hosain, Assistant Professor of the School of Law. The team worked rigorously for around nine months to participate in the Jessup International Moot Court Competition 2024.
Success at the National Round: The SoL Team crowned the Best Memorial at the national round competing with all Bangladeshi Law Schools participating. In the oral round, the team was ranked third best team and qualified to participate in the International Round of the Competition.
International Round: After completing the national round successfully, the team of BRAC University has participated in "White & Case, Jessup 2024" which is the international round. It has been arranged in Washington, DC, USA. This program was held from 30 March to 6 April 2024. In total, 700 reputed universities from the whole world have participated in this competition, where the top 150 universities from 85 countries secured their placement and qualified to represent their delegates in Washington, DC, USA. International Teams we competed against:
In the first preliminary round, the BRAC University team contested against the University of Oxford, the semi-finalist of this competition. In the second round, the team faced the University of Leiden, another continental European giant institution. The third round was against Universidad de Buenos Aires, representing Argentina who secured championship of Jessup several years back. Lastly the fourth round was against Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, representative of Brazil which stood at top 2 at the preliminary round.
Performance and success of SoL Team: Initiating with Oral Advocacy, Taskin Tanika who is the second oralist for the team has placed 339th among 523 oralists across the globe participating this time. Her position is the best ranked oralist from Bangladesh leaving behind BUP and Chittagong Teams' performance. Niaz Mohammad who has represented the team as first oralist, has stood out as the second-best oralist from Bangladesh. His rank is 364th among 523 participants. It is important to note that three teams participated from Bangladesh and BRAC University oralists stood topper from Bangladesh.
In addition, Memorial of BRAC University (Total of Both Applicant and Respondent), like National Round, has placed the highest ranked memorial among universities participating from Bangladesh in international round of the competition. In memorial ranking, BRAC University superseded global giant institutions like Yale University, University of Edinburgh, Columbia Law School, Peeking University, Maastricht University and many other globally prestigious universities. It stood at top 95 out of 143 universities around the globe.
Broader Achievements: Phillip C. Jessup Competition, particularly the International Round is a rare gathering for global best law schools to showcase their performance. It is also pivotal to share their name and fame in front of global legal community which is a rare opportunity otherwise. Particularly, Law Schools from developing countries competing and fighting with the first world institutions having top rank, get a unique pathways to involve in networking, peering and knowledge sharing amidst the challenges and limitations of developing countries' institutions. For us, it was an absolute privilege to wave the national flag before 700+ delegates participating from all over the world when the Executive Director of Internal Law Students Association announced the name of BRAC University!
Mostafa Hosain's participation in the 118th Annual Meeting of American Society of International Law: The Coach of SoL Team Assistant Professor, Md. Mostafa Hosain participated in the 118th Annual Meeting of American Society of International Law (ASIL) which is the most prestigious global gathering of experts of International Law coming from all over the world. Mr. Hosain received the membership of ASIL in addition to be a member of International Environmental Law Working Group of Experts of ASIL.
