BRAC University Computer Club (BUCC) organized a webinar titled "Higher Study Prospects in the USA" on 16 October, 2021. The event sought to outline a pragmatic approach to enrolling in a US educational institution. Mr. Tanvir Rahman, an alumni and former faculty member of Brac University, was the distinguished guest. He is currently a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Delaware.
Mr. Tanvir recommended some US universities for higher studies highlighting their benefits. He suggested registering at least one year ahead of the entry date for Fall semesters, when there is a higher possibility of receiving scholarships. As for institutional funding, he stated that it was extremely difficult in case of master’s programs as contributing satisfactory research was very challenging within two years. However, it was easier for Ph.D. applicants since the contribution period was of a minimum of five years.
Mr. Tanvir also laid emphasis on maintain a healthy CGPA and extracurricular activities such as creating websites. There is no alternative to reading books for basic courses, learning to code, going through relevant papers at Kaggle and Google data set center and improving skills, he said. He urged establishing good relations with faculty members and thesis supervisors. He also spoke of the importance of IELTS and TOEFL assessments, saying English language skills were a prerequisite to becoming teaching assistants and research assistants.
