Dr. Zainab F. Ali graduated in architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1982 where she received the AIA National Award for Excellence in the Study of Architecture. After practicing architecture in the USA for few years she came back to Bangladesh and joined BUET as a Lecturer in 1988. She did her doctoral research at the Environment and Energy Studies Programme at the Architectural Association Graduate School, London where she received a Talent Tuition scholarship from 1996 through 1998. She received her Ph.D. in 2000. She was visiting faculty at Eastern Mediterranean University, North Cyprus during 2000-2001 and taught at the University of Asia Pacific, Dhaka. She joined BRAC University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture on February 17, 2002.
