ENH Chairperson has been appointed as the chairperson for the new PIB Board
Congratulations! to Professor Firdous Azim for being appointed chairperson for the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) board. The new PIB board will serve for a two-year term and the 15-member board of PIB includes Shamsul Huq Zahid, editor of Financial Express; M. Ramiz Uddin Chowdhury, editor of the Dainik Purbokone; Talat Mamun, CEO of Channel 24; Tanvir Chowdhury, a journalist at Al Jazeera; and Iftekhar Mahmud, special correspondent for the Daily Prothom Alo, among others.

The students of ENG 465: Translation Studies, Fall 2024, have organised a workshop titled "A Translation Workshop with Let's Read" held on 14th November 2024 at Bracu campus. Let's Read is a unique app for making kids read various stories around the world in English and Bangla. The facilitator of the workshop, Ms. Sukla Dey, Senior Program Manager of Let's Read showed the students of the course some strategies of translation during the workshop.

A brief bio of the facilitator is given below:
Sukla Dey is a senior program manager for The Asia Foundation in Bangladesh and leads the UNESCO-funded project Hooked on Peace, and the Let’s Read program portfolio in Bangladesh. She leads educational content development for children, capacity-building workshops for young writers and illustrators, and maintains partner and donor relations. Sukla has 20 years of experience working with partners like the British Council, Room to Read, BBC Janala, Bangladesh Reading Association, The American Center, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, banks and government officials, and schools across the country and working to expand the visibility, scope, and local funding for Books for Asia in Bangladesh. She has extensive experience in facilitating trainings and workshops and conducting focus group discussions. She organizes high-visibility events, complete with branding, and works with media personnel. Sukla has served as lead for The Asia Foundation’s pilot project, Access 4 Asia, for two years, where she worked with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. She worked as a project lead for the Strengthening Garments Workers’ project, partnering with BLAST Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) and also worked as a Technical Advisor for Foundations WEESMS program. She led The Asia Foundations long running program for Books for Asia in Bangladesh.

On 17th November 2024, ENH hosted an event titled “Fundamentals Issues with Media Freedom in Bangladesh to Date and What We Can Do in Bangladesh 2.0 to Ensure a Free Press” where editor in chief of Netra News, Mr. Tasneem Khalil was in conversation with Sadaf Saaz, member Board of Trustees Brac University. Professor Firdous Azim, chairperson ENH welcomed the special guest and the audience with the brief introduction of how Mr. Khalil had been exiled in Sweden during the 2006-2008 Bangladesh emergency.

ENH Faculty members presented a paper at national and international conferences
Dr. Sabreena Ahmed, Associate Professor, ENH presented a paper titled “Student Workshops as an Alternative Assessment in Applied Linguistics Classrooms” in the 3rd International Conference on Innovation and Transformation for Development organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Green University of Bangladesh, held on 9-10 November 2024. Dr. Ahmed also chaired a session titled “Recent Developments in ELT/TESOL” at the same conference.
International conference titled "The Trans-Phenomenon in Language, Literature, and Culture" was organised by the Department of English and Humanities at ULAB (University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh) on November 15-16, 2024, at the ULAB Permanent Campus. The event provided a platform for scholars to explore the intersections of language, literature, and culture through the lens of trans-phenomena. Professor Sabiha Huq of ENH was invited as one of the panel discussants for the session titled Glocalizing Professional Learning: Insights from the Margins”. Three other lecturers from ENH— Khondker Shahad Muktadir, Sumaiya Tasnim, and Jahin Kaiissar—presented their academic papers at the conference.

International conference titled “Language Metamorphosis: Implications for Language Education in Decolonial Contexts (LMLEDC)” was organised by the Brac Institute of Languages (BIL), Brac University from 28th to 30th November 2024 at the new campus of the university in Merul Badda, Dhaka.
Dr. Asifa Sultana, Professor, ENH was invited as one of the featured speakers of the conference who presented a paper titled “Who Saves the Indigenous Languages?: A Reflection on the Role of Policies in the Greater Bengal”.
Dr. Md. Al Amin and Dr. Sabreena Ahmed, Associate Professors at ENH also presented their papers titled “Learning to Assess Formatively: Rural Secondary English Teachers’ Challenges, Practices and Adaptation in the New Curriculum” and “The Role of Ecocomposition in Fostering Critical Thinking in a Bangladeshi Young Learner” respectively.
