INT’L CONFERENCE ATTENDED BY PROF. FIRDOUS AZIM
Prof. Firdous Azim presented a paper titled “The Words That Govern Us: The Discourse around Women, Poverty and Migration” at an International conference. It was the final workshop of the Poverty Research Network’s current project, ‘Beyond Development: Local Visions of Global Poverty’. The conference took place in Glasgow on September 28, 29, and was hosted by the University of Glasgow.
Prof. Azim’s paper mainly looked at feminist efforts to change the terms that form the terrain of female labour migration, and how the boundaries between migration and trafficking are blurred.
At the end of the period of Poverty Research Network’s network building, representatives from each of the localities were invited to participate at this major event to exchange ideas, discuss common experiences of poverty, and share ideas on poverty reduction solutions.
ENH FACULTY MEMBERS PRESENTED PAPERS IN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES
Roohi Huda, Senior Lecturer of ENH, presented her paper titled “Transgression and Violence in Maugham's FMS Stories: The Influence of Colonial Alienation and Backdrops” at the International Conference on Literature titled Contemporary Perspectives on/in Postcolonial and Diasporic Literature and Theory held in Penang, Malaysia. It was arranged by the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The conference was a tremendous opportunity for researchers of postcolonial literature as it had Professor Bill Ashcroft, one of the leading authorities of Postcolonialism and co-author of the seminal text, The Empire Writes Back, as the keynote speaker. Academics from 16 different countries presented papers at this conference.
Lubaba Sanjana, Lecturer of ENH, presented her paper titled “Implementing Learner-Centered Approach: A Survey on Its Feasibility” at 1st International Conference on English Learning & Teaching Skills, ICELTS 2018. It was organized by the department of Basic Science and Humanities in collaboration with Indian Statistical Institute, British Council, Kolkata, and ELT[at]I[dot] The conference had academics from 15 countries from all over the world: featuring over 130 research papers, keynote addresses from distinguished International and national speakers, and interactive workshops.
A three day international conference was attended by Salma Khan, Lecturer, ENH. It was held from 11th to 13th August, 2018. Her paper was titled “The Impact of Enemy Turned Vested Property Act on Hindu Minorities in Bangladesh”. It examined the impact of Vested Property Act, which is criticized as an instrument to confiscate properties from Bangladeshi Hindus. National Prof. Dr. Rafiqul Islam inaugurated the conference as the chief guest while Dr. Jashpal Kaur Dhanju, Professor of History, Panjab University, was the special guest.
OPED PUBLISHED IN DHAKA TRIBUNE
Anika Saba, Lecturer, ENH, wrote an op-ed titled “Waste not, want not” which was published in Dhaka Tribune on September 11, 2018. Taking cue from recent food-habits of city-dwellers, Saba described how buffet is one of the reasons for wasting food. Considering the alarming number of people having health issues, she suggested everyone to have less junk food, and to balance between local and foreign cuisine. In a country where there are hungry mouths in every corner, food waste is shameful, she added.
