Professor Naiyyum Choudhury has been appointed by the Government of Bangladesh as Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) with effect from 19 November, 2014 for a period of three years. BAERA is the competent authority for all radiological and nuclear practices in the country. It is playing the key role in formulating, implementing and amending BAERA Act (2012) and NSRC Rules-1997 in order to strengthen nuclear regulatory control and implementing effective regulations throughout the country. Professor Choudhury joined BRAC University as Coordinator of biotechnology and microbiology programs in the MNS department. He was involved in the formulation of the National Biotechnology Policy 2005, National Bio-safety Guidelines in 1999 and then in 2005 and in formulation of the National Science and Technology Policy, 2011. He is a Member of the Executive Committee of the National Council for Science and Technology (ECNCST) of the Bangladesh Government. For his outstanding contribution in science and technology, Professor Choudhury received the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences gold medal in 2000 and Zaki Memorial Award in 2002.
