School of Law announces the launch of its latest report titled "Social Media Platform Regulation: Key Trends in Sri Lanka, India, and Bangladesh," produced in collaboration with the School of Law, BRAC University of Bangladesh, the LIRNEasia of Sri Lanka and the Centre for Communication Governance, National Law University Delhi (NLUD) of India. The report is the outcome of a two year long project funded by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Rule of Law program.
The report focuses on the social media regulatory frameworks in Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh and examines key trends in these jurisdictions. Using case studies, it evaluates the implementation of these frameworks against key principles of the rule of law.
The study report was unveiled in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 21 May 2024. The launch was followed by a panel discussion with experts such as Mr. Saliya Pieris, Former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Ms. Bhavani Fonseka, Senior Researcher & Attorney-at-Law at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Ms. Saritha Irugalbandara, Head of Advocacy at Hashtag Generation, Ms. Helani Galpaya, CEO of LIRNEasia, Ms. Tavishi A., Programme Manager at the Center for Communication Governance, National Law University Delhi, and Mr. Md Saimum Reza Talukder, Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, BRAC University. The discussion was expertly moderated by Nalaka Gunawardene, Science Writer and Media Analyst.
The research team from the School of Law is composed of Md. Saimum Reza Talukder, a Senior Lecturer, who serves as the Lead Researcher, and Professor K. Shamsuddin Mahmood, the Dean of the School of Law, who serves as the Co-researcher. Ms. Nafisa Tabassum, Mr. Md. Mosabbir Hossain, and Mr. Raihan Rahman served as student Research Assistants for the research project. Mr. Safi Ahmed, as the Coordinating Assistant to the Dean of the School of Law, has been responsible for coordinating the logistics of the study in Bangladesh.
