Centre for Peace and Justice of Brac University organized a public lecture titled ‘Rohingya –The Need for Justice and Rights in Rakhine’ at BRAC Centre Inn on 18 February, 2020.
Mr. Tun Khin, Rohingya leader, Co-Founder, and President, Burmese Rohingya Organization UK, Mr. Philip Ruddock, Chair of Australian Liberal Party NSW; Former attorney general and former father of the Australian Parliament, and Imtiaz Ahmed, Professor of International Relations and Director Centre for Genocide Studies; and Dr. Myint HIa, Chair of Foreign Affairs of Arakan Rohingya National Organization, Sydney attended as panelists.
The distinguished panelists gave their valuable insights on the need for justice and rights in Rakhine for Rohingya. Mr. Tun Khin, said the international community should force Myanmar implement the provisional measures imposed by the International Court of Justice last month.
Prof Imtiaz Ahmed of DU’s International Relations department questioned the role of international community over the Rohingya repatriation. More countries should come forward to support Gambia he said.
Philip Ruddock, mayor of Hornsby Shire of Australia, underlined the need for citizenship of Rohingyas. “Rohingya people should be taken back with dignity and safety,” he said.
Manzoor Hasan OBE, Executive Director, Centre for Peace also spoke on the occasion. “Sadly, Myanmar’s mess has affected Bangladesh, and even worse, some countries are acting as aiders and abettors to make the situation worse. The international community can’t walk away from this situation but vigorously continue to put pressure on it by keeping the spotlight on the real issues.” he said.
