School of Law, Brac University organised the webinar on the Role of MLAA in Dispute settlement Mechanism on 14 August, Saturday. The seminar was a part of research project on "Revisiting Traditional Dispute Resolution Mechanism: Shalish in the Context" supported by the Research Task Force of Brac University. The webinar was chaired by the Dean, School of Law Professor K Shamsuddin Mahmood and the Key note was addressed by Advocate Muhammad Ibrahim Mia, coordinator of Madaripur Legal Aid Association (MLAA) and the event was moderated by Md Mostafa Hosain, Assistant Professor, SoL.
The discussion focused on the congeniality of ADR (Shalish, Mediation, Reconciliation and Arbitration) in resolving disputes among the people and in mitigating the ratio of failure of justice due to abuse of process, overburdening of court and other procedural formalism of the present formal legal system. The speaker projected the role of MLAA in resolving disputes and shared the procedure, duration and legal basis involved in such resolution. He viewed that around 80% of family matters, land related disputes, petty crimes and contractual obligations are resolved through informal justice system due to its short duration, least expense and comfortability of parties. The students from School of Law and young researchers participated in the event. This research work is headed by Professor K. Shamsuddin Mahmood as PI and Assistant Professor Md. Mostafa Hosain, as Co-PI.
