A senior lecturer of the School of Law at BRAC University has delivered a lecture titled “Securitization of Social Media and the Rule of Law: South Asian Perspectives” at South Asian University (SAU) in New Delhi on 26 August, 2022. The lecture was a part of a Faculty of Legal Studies Seminar Series 2022 (9), organised by the SAU and participated by master’s and doctoral students.
The senior lecturer, Md Saimum Reza Talukder, discussed the recent trends of South Asian countries securitizing social media in the name of national security, public morality, public health, terrorism, etc., which have curtailed the digital rights of netizens and affected the principles of the rule of law. In this regard, participants from various South Asian countries spontaneously shared their thoughts and attempted to outline a path forward.
Professor Dr Srinivas Burra, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Legal Studies at the SAU, presided over the session and moderated the discussion following Talukder’s lecture.
