The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS), in association with Brac University Natural Sciences Club organized and hosted the first ever inter-institution Science Exhibition at Brac University on 17th February, 2019 at the university auditorium and adjacent UB 1 café.
There were two categories for the competition- College and university. The competition was divided into three rounds- online abstract submission, oral presentation and finally, the project display round. A total of 70 online abstracts were received from over 30 schools and universities combined. Out of these, 30 teams were selected to move on to the second round, which was an oral presentation round, where the selected teams had to come and present the idea of their tentative models via power point presentation. Institutions like Chittagong University, University of Dhaka, AIUB, IUB, BracU, St. Joseph School, Dhaka Imperial College, and many more, came to present their projects. After assessment of the presentations by MNS faculties, 23 teams were selected to move on to the third and final round of the competition, which was the project display round.
The final round took place on 17th February, 2019. It was inaugurated by the Chairperson of MNS, Prof. A F M Yusuf Haider. Faculties of MNS assessed the different projects. Display and judging of the projects continued till 3 PM. This was followed by a Science Quiz competition, which was open to all- participants, guests, students of BracU. From the university category, the team Unknown Inventors from American International University of Bangladesh ( AIUB) became the champion and the team showed how to produce electricity from soil , Team Auroverse from BRAC University became first runner up and the team showed that robot can work according to audio command and Team SESM from Independent University of Bangladesh ( IUB) became second runner up and the team showed production of electricity from potato.
From college category, the team BISCEC from Bangladesh International School and College became the champion and in this project it was shown how to plan a city keeping the environment healthy and with reduced consumption of energy. The team Imaginers Squad from Bir Shrestho Nur Mohammad Rifles College became first runner up and in this project it was shown how the device developed by the participant assist blind person and the team Refine Stick from Saint Joseph Higher Secondary School became second runner up and in this project the participant showed how his low-cost filter help to purify water.
The exhibition was then visited by the Vice Chancellor of Brac University, Prof. Vincent Chang, along with the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Tamim and other faculties and staff.
The programme ended with the closing speeches of the VC, Pro-Vc and the Chairperson of MNS. The convener of the exhibition, Dr. Mahboob Hossain, professor of MNS department thanked all the participants, Brac University administration, faculty members, visitors and all the members of Brac University Natural Science Club (who worked hard for several days for the exhibition) for their cordial suppoto successfullylly held the Science Exhibition 2019.
