On the 27th of July, 2019, a workshop on OpenStack Cloud System and its 9th birthday celebration was arranged by Cloud Computing and Networking Research Group (CCNRG), CSE Department and OpenStack Bangladesh in association with Brac University Computer Club (BUCC). The facilitator of the program was Mr. Mobarak Hossain, Managing Director, Nationwide ISP & Data Center, Plexus Cloud Ltd. It informed about the basics and applications of OpenStack Cloud System. Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mottalib, Chairperson, CSE Department inaugurated the event and invited students to utilize the private cloud based on the available hardware.
Mr. Hossain discussed about cloud programming, cloud computing models: Development Model and Service Model. He elaborated that the development model is categorized into three parts: Public, Private and Hybrid Cloud System. A survey showed that about 21% participants use public cloud, 4% prefer private cloud and 71% of the participants use hybrid cloud system. OpenStack began in 2010 as a joint project of Rackspace Hosting and NASA. The OSF (OpenStack Foundation) was founded in 2012 to help people build and operate open infrastructures. With 105,000 members in 187 countries from 675 organizations, OSF is one of the largest global open source foundation. It is backed by 100 companies including Gold & Platinum members.
The presenter discussed about the guiding principles of OpenStack, 'The Four Opens': Open Source, Open Design, Open Development and Open Community. He highlighted that the users include Walmart, Overstock, Nike, Snapdeal etc. Among three major cloud system operators with most users include OpenStack along with Linux Kernel and Google chromium. He demonstrated how to access OpenStack cloud, requirements to use a cloud system and how people can use the services of cloud system to get their jobs done more easily.
Finally, he thanked Brac University for the opportunity to show people, the importance of cloud operating system and how the world is turning to cloud based systems for optimized solutions. The seminar concluded by cutting the cake to celebrate the 9th birthday of OpenStack Bangladesh in the hands of Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Mottalib, chairperson, CSE and Dr. Md. Motaharul Islam, Associate Professor, CSE and Coordinator, CCNRG. The event was coordinated by Ms. Jannatun Noor, lecturer, CSE, Mr. Annajiat Alim Rasel, faculty advisor, BUCC, Mr. Mostafijur Rahman Akhond, and other members of the CSE department were present in the event.
This interactive event was a success with 80+ participants, thanks to the volunteers: Rowshanara Sadia, Md. Ashikur Rahman, Mushahidul Islam, Sabbir Ahmed, Md. Abrar-Ur-Rahman, Sazia Afroz, Mushfiqul Islam Chowdhury, Nayem-Ul-Islam, and Saiham Rahman.
