Students of BRAC University’s (BRACU) Residential Semester Fall-2018 session observed “Global Ethics Day” on Wednesday, 17 October 2018 at Savar aiming to instill ethics and moral values among youths.
The observance started in the morning with the taking of five oaths, “I will never lie”, “I will never litter”, “I will obey traffic rules”, “I will be empathetic to others” and “I will never waste food”. Later students planted trees.
Professor Dara Shamsuddin, Department of Geography and Environment, Jahangirnagar University, gave a lecture on “Ethics matter, regardless of place, origin or belief”.
He said human ethical behavior was influenced by family, friends, immediate society, community, institutional rules.
In Bangladesh’s culture, people are always told what not to do but not told what to do, he said, adding that people should focus more on learning and practicing ethical conduct in order to avoid unethical conduct.
Campus Superintendent Rehan Ahmed appreciated students’ activities regarding cleanliness throughout day, saying it was their turn to bring changes all around as they were the future leaders of society.
Students performed a drama and engaged in a debate. The event ended in the evening with a cultural program.
