A two-day hands-on workshop on Outcome Based Education (OBE) was organized by Department of English and Humanities (ENH) and Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), BRACU. It was held on 24 and 25 October, 2018 in the seminar room of ENH, 13th floor, University Building 2. All the faculty members of ENH participated in the workshop. Prof. Md. Tafazzal Hussain, Director, IQAC, BRACU, was also present at the workshop where he briefly discussed the importance of the OBE approach, and what the universities are required to do with regard to this new framework.
The workshop was facilitated by three of the faculty members of ENH: Dr. Asifa Sultana, Anika Saba, and Lubaba Sanjana. They have working experience as well as subject expertise gained from several workshops and training through Professional Development Centre (PDC).
The first day of the workshop gave an overall orientation to the concept of OBE. It highlighted the importance of OBE by addressing the levels of outcome: ILO (Institutional Learning Outcome), PLO (Programme Learning Outcome) and CLO (Course Learning Outcome). Through several hands-on activities, the facilitators helped the faculty members develop tentative PLOs for ENH. Afterwards, the alignment among these learning outcomes through mapping was also demonstrated.
The next day, all the faculty members were asked to bring along the course outlines for their respective courses for Fall ‘18. They were given handouts to do the CLO-PLO mapping for each of their courses. Afterwards, they were divided in groups to discuss and give peer-feedback. Lastly, Dr. Asifa Sultana gave a brief overview on how to do assessment in an OBE framework. The workshop successfully ended thanking all the participants and facilitators for their fruitful discussion and active participation. ENH further plans to arrange another detailed workshop on assessment in near future.
