It is my great pleasure to inform you that our colleague from the Department of Pharmacy at Brac University, Mohammad Kawsar Sharif Siam was invited as a national judge at the Bangladesh Famelab 2019 hosted by British Council.
Famelab is the world’s leading
science communication competition that requires each contestant to present a science topic of their choice with content, clarity and charisma in three minutes, using props. British Council Bangladesh in association with Govt. of People's Republic of Bangladesh and Times Cheltenham Science Festival, UK has brought the stage of FameLab to give the Bangladeshi science enthusiasts an international platform to showcase them.
In this regard, nationwide registration and auditions was carried out with interested young science students from Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet. A registration desk of FameLab was set for the students of BRAC University in the university building 3 on January 2019. The competition reached out to 1.4 million students from 70 institutions in Bangladesh in quest of the National FameLab winner who will represent Bangladesh in the Famelab International Final along with finalists from over 30 countries, in Cheltenham Science Festival, Cheltenham, UK. A total of 600 contestant from different public and private universities of Bangladesh were screened during the selection round and 14 national finalists took part in a masterclass conducted by Malcolm Love, a media producer, trainer and a former senior correspondent of BBC, UK.
On Saturday, 23 March 2019 the National Finale of FameLab 2019 took place at The Westin Dhaka. The top 14 talented individuals showcased their three-minute presentations in front of the judges, esteemed guests and audiences. The judges panel consisted of Mohammad Kawsar Sharif Siam, Brac University; Humaira Akhter, University of Dhaka; Aupee Karim, Media personnel and Architect; Mustak Ayub, University of Dhaka; Riaz Ahamed Siddique, Film Actor.
The panel of judges was involved in judging the contestants starting from the audition in different cities of Bangladesh to the grand finale. I am proud to say that, Brac University was well represented during Siam’s communication and comments given to the contestants, in media interviews and overall at the grand finale event. At the Finale, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak was the chief guest while H.E Robert Chatterton Dickson, British High commissioner to Bangladesh, Md Sohrab Hossain, Senior secretary, Ministry of Education and Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman, University Grants Commission, Bangladesh were present as special guests. Different universities Vice Chancellors, Deans, Program directors and Heads were also present as invited guests at the grand finale event.
I appreciate Siam for his diligent effort, as he didn’t miss any classes or meetings of the department for the whole duration of his involvement with this event as well as for bearing the torch of Brac University at such a platform. On behalf of the Department of Pharmacy I wish him all the best!
