Dr. Sharmina Hussain, associate professor of the department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS) , BRAC university attended the research school on “Dynamical systems and its applications to Biology” which took place in A.F. Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban, Department of Mathematics, University of Dhaka, from June 10-June 21, 2019. This kind of spectacular event was arranged for the first time ever in Bangladesh and it was indeed a remarkable and significant experience to attend there. The aim of this research school was the development of research in mathematics in developing countries. Near about sixty young researchers from home and abroad attended this research school and six renowned academicians from different universities from France and Brazil volunteered to teach the participants. It is to be mentioned that CIMPA (International Center for Pure and Applied Mathematics) is a nonprofit International organization working for the development of Mathematics research in developing countries since 1978 and the primary mission of AFMRF (A.F. Mujibur Rahman Foundation) is the expansion of educational opportunities and improvement in the quality of education with a special emphasis on Mathematics.
Dr. Sharmina Hussain would like to extend her hearty thanks to the MNS department, BRAC University for granting duty leave during this graceful event. Dr. Hussain is confident enough that her participation in this research school has surely been expanded her research horizon and would have very positive impact on her research career.
JITU PAUL, BS students in Biotechnology Program presented his thesis on 20th June 2019. The title of JITU PAUL’s research was “Observation of Bacterial Natural Transformation between K. Variicola & Salmonella spp. in the surface water of Dhaka City”. The work was supervised by Mr. Mahbubul H Siddiqee, Senior lecturer, MNS Department, BRAC University. The viva examination board was chaired by. Prof. A F M Yusuf Haider, Chairperson MNS Department and attended by Dr. Iftekhar Bin Naser, Coordinator, BS in Biotechnology Program, MNS Department, Mr. Mahbubul H Siddiqee Senior lecturer, MNS Department, BRAC University. The board expressed satisfaction on the work accomplished in these research projects.
The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, BRAC University arranged their monthly seminar on the 20th of June 2019, Thursday at UB21511. The seminar was chaired by Chairperson of the department, Professor A F M Yusuf Haider. The speaker of the session was Mr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan Akash, Lecturer of the MNS department, BRAC University. His presentation was entitled “Evaluation of Allele Specific Primer Designed for Pharmacogenetic Studies Using a Two-Tier Method” where he talked about the association of genotype with the varying drug response among different individuals. He emphasized on the introduction of molecular diagnostic techniques like Single Nucleotide Polymorphism or SNP detection techniques for the more effective treatment of diseases. He also presented his newly devised two-tier method which tests for the specificity of allele-specific primers that are used in the detection of clinically important SNPs. The seminar was followed by an interactive question/answer session.
