To fight against the Coronavirus pandemic which has affected the world, the Department of Pharmacy, Brac University (BU) and Brac University Pharma Society (BUPS) have been preparing alcohol-based hand rubs. This initiative is to help everyone so that preventive measures can be taken to contain the disease.
Recently, it has been found that patients with diabetes, especially those above 60 years, are among the groups most at risk for more severe complications if they contract the COVID-19 disease. Diabetes and high glucose levels are associated with increased complications such as respiratory failure and mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Moreover, a study in China consisting of 72,000 COVID-19 cases found that people with diabetes had more than triple the death rate of those without diabetes.
To minimize the risk of these complications, the Department of Pharmacy of BU and BUPS provided 300+ hand rubs on 21 March, 2020 (Saturday) to the Department of Endocrinology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to be distributed among patients with diabetes. This initiative will help prevent those most at risk from potential harm. The department will continue this initiative.
